She's not going anywhere. Her teams are ranked and make regionals.

We won't be worried about Softball when the big donors have spent a lot of money on Football and - more than likely - Men's basketball this year.

Not shocked at all. Her results have gotten worse and worse the last 5+ years. I really thought there was a chance Woodward was going to fire her after that blunder of a home regional last year with their best batting team in years. Should have known better though.

I really think this is her worst pitching staff she has ever had at LSU. Going to be a rough year if the bats aren’t blazing hot every game.

Heavener CAN be dominant, but she gets out of control a few innings a game. But, yeah, the Pitching will be below average, and the hitting will be below average.

If we beat any ranked teams, it will have to be with the opponent making errors (like the Oklahoma State game) and walking a lot of our hitters. We can't match up with most, if not, any, ranked team this year.

I thought our transfers (especially hitters) would be a lot better.

Below average on Defense as well. All teams have to do is pitch around Edwards to beat us.

Our transfer SS is definitely a step back defensively. Need to put Hodges back at SS.

We also need to hire the SE coach at seasons end.

I have to say as a Beth critic the last few seasons (particularly not firing Dobson), that I would have never guessed the team would be this bad in such a critical year for Torina.

I liked the impact Neal had initially but we are already moving backwards? Feels like no matter what changes, all roads lead to Beth at the top.

She might honestly get lucky and have another season with the #1 class coming and the football/imminent men’s basketball overhaul.

Heavener had the hype and maybe the talent to be All-American and ride to a national championship. Another underachiever or underdeveloped—probably a combination of the both.

Face it. If Beth couldn’t win a national championship with a staff anchored by Hoover and Walljasper and with warriors and hard-asses like Jaquish, Bell, and Serrett in the lineup—she ain’t never winning one.

And it seems we recruit for “image” with “cute” girls who could win a beauty contest. We need some goddamn monsters who can squash a ball and put the fear of god in an opposing pitcher like Oklahoma and Texas and Florida routinely recruit.

And yes, while it doesn’t have near as big an impact on LSU athletics, Beth’s attitude is like Brian Kelly’s was. She also knows that with softball being a low priority, her gravy train will continue. In fact, as long as she makes a regional—even if she gets bounced—don’t be surprised if Verge plays it safe and renews her contract.

Watching on tv they looked listless, no energy, no passion, no leadership! The AA first baseman was horrible, 3rd base trips on her feet , 2nd base routine ground ball and kicks it. The only player worth watching is the center fielder. To me, not knowing anything just observing it looks like this thinks it’s crap doesn’t stink and they walk around entitled. Wouldn’t shock me if there were major culture issues with this team because if you do the research other than a few players the others including returners have tanked.

I don't know if it's Neal taking a step back this year or that the transfers are having a hard time with his system. That's kind of hard to believe because Lorenz was with Neal before and she is lost at the plate.

If they fire McMahon, Beth is definately staying. If they don't fire McMahon, Beth is still staying (how can you fire Beth and keep Matt?). So, yes. Beth is here for the next couple of years.

They will not renew her contract though. That decision will come when she has one year left on her contract.

I have a question as it pertains to coaches, my son played baseball in the old PAC 12 and he had a good career but a down 3rd yr with the exact same coaches doing the exact same stuff they did the yr before, is his down yr his fault or coaches fault? If Leavitt sucks next yr is it LK fault or Sl fault? My point players must take accountability and blame because I know personally they sure want the credit when it’s going well. Was Torina great when Berzon was 2 time AA? Or did Beth just suck her last yr? Was the hitting coach elite when he developed AA at several places and one of the top offenses in the SEC last yr with nearly the same roster or does he just suck now? I preached this to my kid, players must take ownership of their game and must not play the blame game when it goes bad.To me that’s a losers mentality and will not get you very far in life generally !

Then we will hear “But she can’t recruit with one year left!” I hope I’m wrong and I wouldn’t bet the house, but I’d bet a little money that Verge ends up renewing her. Making the softball postseason is not the achievement making March Madness is, but I bet that’s the way Verge looks at it.

And yes. The culture in the program is terrible. On the softball FB page, players and players’ parents attack fans who criticize. Players’ parents fight with one another. They circle the wagons about Beth. And Leftwich had those Billy Graham crusades going on “So-and-so ACCEPTED CHRIST! We baptized her in the swimming pool!” That’s all good in its place but we invest money to win championships, not be a church. Makes me wonder if they wouldn’t recruit a player who wasn’t a “believer.”

And yes, that goddamn idiot behind home plate is the face of the program. I know firsthand some recruits said they would not come to LSU because of him.

That is my point. When she has only 1 year left (I think that is at the end of next year), they will either renew or fire her then.

Your point is taken but we are creeping up on a decade of underachievement for Beth Torina. If it were just one or two seasons, sure, but it’s pretty obvious there is a culture problem at the top.

I agree with you. Beth is not right for LSU. She is not worth the top 10 salary that she is given. LSU could do better, and we wouldn't even need to spend more than we are currently spending.

However, I don't understand your point about how Beth is recruiting cute girls while Oklahoma and Texas are recruiting ugly beasts that put the fear of God into people. Texas and Oklahoma routinely have beauties that could easily compete and win beauty contests against LSU. The difference is that they are just consistently better at softball.

There was someone on here—I think I remember the username but won’t call it because I’m not absolutely sure—who, when the valid argument was stated—that top ten salary, some of the best facilities in the country, etc. meant that Beth wasn’t meeting expectations—this guy would argue that LSU’s facilities were not really top notch—trying to defend Beth. The guy was obviously a relative.

I didn’t say Texas or Oklahoma had “beasts” at every position and you can have “beauties” that are warriors and hard asses. Sandra Simmons, Bailey Landry, Savanah Jaquish, and AJ Andrews come to mind. But it just seems we recruit for “image” and I’m not saying that’s anything but a hypothesis of mine. It just does not seem we recruit players like Hoover or Walljasper anymore.

The other factor in ppl blaming coaches like the hitting coach is I could point to Lassiter, Daniel and Tori Edwards why doesn’t he suck with them, I’m sure they go the through the same practices, Daniel and Lassiter are having career yrs. It’s a bad argument to blame coaches for player performance, culture and decision making is fair game imo.

I agree 100% and have heard the same... and one of those is close family to me with a natty in recent years who said he is distracting to the home team pitchers.

I very rarely upvoted a Tiger Ree post but he was absolutely right when he said it can’t help but be distracting when he hollers the pitchers’ names like he did. “HEY!!! … SHELBI!!!”

When he’s right behind the plate no matter how zoned in you are that will distract you. And yes, the word is out among top high school pitchers. Not surprising some recruits have said because of him that they would not consider LSU.

Can someone explain why Torina doesn’t recruit Louisiana girls?

Calvary Baptist pitcher - Georgia prized signing. No Torina around

French Settlement pitcher - Ole Miss prized signing. No Torina around

John Curtis catcher - Florida prized signing. Again no Torina.

So the Louisiana girls all leaving to play in the SEC are good enough for Ole Miss, GA, and Florida, but not good enough for Torina?

Ridiculous.

Get the best from Louisiana on the damn team Beth.
