well not really, John Bel wasn't offering social commentary, he was purely arguing optics and people's inabilities to see the difference in private vs. public funding

This thread has some Stupid Hall of Fame-worthy quotes in it.
It scares me that many of you are registered voters.

“I am concerned. I’m not as concerned as I would be if those were tax dollars being spent,” Edwards said. “I do think that there has to be some look nationally at some sort of salary caps for the organizations. This is an arms race, and it’s gotten out of control. Some of the salaries and buyouts are obscene and they can create all sorts of problems. “Everybody at this table knows that those are not taxpayer dollars but the general public doesn’t necessarily know that,” he continued, referencing the Advocate reporters and editors in the meeting. “And what about those faculty members at LSU and elsewhere who haven’t had a raise of any size in many, many years and they’re seeing what’s happening in athletics?”

Here's a thought....hear me out John.

Maybe you call out the fricking incompetent legislators of this fricked up state. Maybe you call them out to do something to fix the budget issues of our state. If the ELECTED Officials would do their jobs, to prevent us from spending more money than we have, then we wouldn't be concerned about the "perception" of a self funded organization. You're basically mad that TAF and Tiger Athletics is well run and well funded and taking a public shot at them because of it.

It's pretty dumb but we also paid a coach with a 3-21 SEC record 3.5 mil so I could see the argument.

The proverbial 'elephant in the room', seemingly is NEVER discussed by the vast majority of our elected officials....what elephant you say? PUBLIC funds actually are being utilized to subsidize SPORTS programs at ALL of the states public schools ! YOUR tax dollars help pay for the coaching staffs at ULL,LaTech,McNeese,Nicholls,Southern etc.etc.etc. In fact, what should be done is ELIMINATE many of these mini 4yr. colleges and morph them into what they should have been from the very beginning i.e. specialized trade/industry institutions ! A state of our size, simply cannot afford to offer 4 yr. degrees and grad.schools every 50 miles or so apart ! What they were always designed to be is a feeding trough for local interests supported with local and state tax dollars....INCLUDING their non-self supporting athletic departments ! it's all a sham ! No politico will ever stand up against and speak the truth !

This is sort of OT, but does anyone else here feel like TD is becoming more of a clickbait type sports media? Look at the LSU lite articles.... this isn’t even close to the only example, but there’s one where a few players are congratulating Canada for landing the Maryland job... why do I get the impression that the admins here are more pro-clicks instead of being pro-LSU like they were at the inception of this board? Does it not seem like they are trying to further the wedge between fans and LSU admin??? Seems like they are always using misleading headlines and/or controversial shite, and it’s never been like that before... Am I way off base here?

I know I’ll probably get blasted for even mentioning this, and it probably could have been worded better, but oh well

I’d be interested to get his opinions on a tax cap, government salary cap, and government spending cap seeing as how none of those are his money and he sees no problem in taking it nor spending it.

I assume the law he wants passed by the Louisiana legislature to cap college coaches' salaries will include coaches in Alabama and Texas, too.

Why do you think this has anything to do with the Louisiana legislature? His comments were regarding a potential NCAA rule. Of course he wants the rule to apply to Alabama and Texas schools as well.

quote:

“I saw the other day where a statement was made – can’t remember who it was, but I think it was someone from the NCAA – that it may be time to look at imposing limits on what the entire staff can be paid. Otherwise, you’re going to have the haves and have-nots and so forth. It’s a real problem,” Edwards said.

College football teams are already severely constrained on the players side - scholarship limits and a salary cap of $0. There is literally a scholarship rule called the "Bear Bryant Rule" to distort the "market" for players that Alabama had created.

NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA all have salary caps (though not all for coaches).

It's not an unreasonable position. Particularly for a "have-not" trying to run with the "haves".

Most of you have no clue the state budget works .
If its worth getting upset about, take a few minutes to read about how it actually works and who is responsible for what...

This is not directed at you in particular, but I'm going to respond nonetheless.

I think the admin of this message board are just letting people vent to each other about the lack of competence the LSU Administration has shown in key areas and for that, I respect them.

If people want a message board where everything is peachy and no one can call something out for what it is, then go start a new message board where everyone sings Kumbaya and ban people who critique the program/coaches. I mean, I won't join, but that's their option.

It’s not the board’s job to be pro-LSU, very absurd statement by hangover

It’s a fan discussion board. If segments of the fans have a voice of discontent, then that’s where the discussion goes. They aren’t paid by LSU to be their voice or cheerleader. The frick is wrong with you hangover?

Discussion around the basketball team seems pretty positive. Gym discussion? People seem to be gushing. Why is that?
