the runner never touched home plate

He was awarded home so he doesn’t have to touch home plate. That’s the only cut and dry part of that whole screwed up call.

What's new? The SEC has some of the worst officials in college sports.

Yes they did. That's why the batter was awarded first base the runner on third "scored."

I can't count the number of things this crew missed in that sequence

It wasn’t to cover their bases, that is the exact penalty of the rule they called. It comes straight from the rule book. Their interpretation of the rule is the problem (the judgement part), enforcing the rule they were spot on.

No they didn’t.

Go check the box score. You’ll see a balk on Herring’s stat line.

They asked the slimey head off umpires about this and he blabbered some bs about a balk was called as a result of the interference ruling so something something bullshite. Sounded fishy and not something from the rulebook.

They were pretty much making it up as they went.

That specific scenario is a catchers interference AND a balk on the pitcher according to the official who explained the result.

Bottom line is that play needs to be reviewable. Any play that is an out or a run, actually all plays should be reviewable. Especially a play like that in that moment.

I was being facetious when I said they were covering their bases. Otherwise, I said what you are saying was the call on the play.

Yeah and it was catchers interference so the usc coach is given 2 choices. The strike or the interference.

Plate Ump gets no help. He can’t see it all. He has a runner coming. He got the crew together and gets crickets…blank stares.
Then you don’t overturn your original out call.

You are 100% correct. They have to record the run and runner advancing, so on the stat sheet it is recorded as a balk.

baseball is such an intricate sport. today I learned that you can strike out with four strikes and you can score a run without touching home plate.

This is what I don’t get.. the list of calls that are reviewable includes:
quote:

catcher’s interference with the batter’s swing except on a squeeze play or steal of home

So the NCAA thought that this specific play was so reliant on the plate umpire’s judgement in the moment to specifically exclude it from video review. But somehow in this case they threw the umpire’s judgement in the moment out the window without even looking at a replay.
