Sub-par would be a vast improvement. They are averaging shooting 58% from FT line in the first 3 games. For context, the WORST FT shooting team in the country last year averaged 64%

I'm confident that number will improve. But it is somewhat concerning given (a) FT shooting is more of an individual act - one doesn't need to create chemistry with new teammates to be a good FT shooter and (b) several of the guys in the expected rotation are not good FT shooters for their careers:

Dent - 71% (but only one year of 4 above 70%)
Ugochuckwu - 61%
Dioubate - 60%
Ruzic - 56%
Dessert - 48%

Those numbers are worrisome. Especially when your lead guard only has one yr over 70%.

Going to need your guards to be better than 61%.

Have to get Ruzic the stop cocking the ball behind his head, Dent just needs a little arc on his shot. Dioubate has a middle hitch especially when he gets tired. Just some mechanical things with those 3 that can be fixed pretty easy.

Runic looks like he had a decent shot overseas. I could see him shooting a decent free throw percentage for a big man.

I didn't get to watch the Florida state scrimmage.

He’s not a bad shooter but his FT shooting has been awful. He doesn’t need to bring the ball behind his head on a FT. He’s slinging the ball.

Dessert looked slow and overweight.

I just checked out some of the highlights.

Divine looks like his form is alright shooting free throws.

I think niang will be fine once he gets more comfortable. They are going to need him on both ends if they want to win tough games.

Dessert was disappointing.

He and Niang couldn’t get into the flow of the game. They’re just not used to the pace yet. Dessert had 2 good inside moves and showed nice touch. We’re going to need his physicality but I’d say Ruzic is ahead of him right now.

on free throws its a very small sample size tainted by two games where the players were utterly exhausted by insane minutes. guys are bad at free throws when totally exhausted

That opinion would carry more weight if the guys were otherwise good FT shooters. However, the numbers across multiple season reflect many are sub 65% shooters. The only two guys who have been reliably above 70% for their careers are Clark and Niang (in limited attempts).

While I'm confident, they will shoot better than 58% as a team, its hard to foresee this group being a good FT shooting team on the whole.

true, but the weight carried by the argument is adequate, which is why you are confident they will improve.
