Most agree Milazzo starts the year as Catcher number one. We will see if he ends the year that way. I personally think he improves his offense and makes this a tight race all year. Good problem to have. He ran well in the fall and had a solid HR as well.

I think that's going to be the rule one more year. Outside of special circumstances (that will probably be grandfathered), the COVID years should wrap up next year.

Beloso is a very nice piece to be a backup 1B at this level. Has three years of experience against the very best pitching, could have transferred if he wanted to but chose to stay.

Yeah that's what I expect to keep it through 2024 season as 35+5.

Although TECHNICALLY they could do 2025 season if someone came in school in 2019-2020 losing that 2020 season if 2020 didnt coutn towards eligbility...

2020 - doesnt count
2021 - Freshman
2022 - Sophomore
2023 - Junior
2024 - Senior
2025 - If they took a redshirt year any time from 2021-2024

This is why a 6th year guy like Beloso should be gone. You’re taking reps and development time away from your future.

What a dumb post for a number of reasons.

1) Beloso doesn't count against the roster limit since he's a 5th year covid guy.
2) He's a veteran leader who likely knows his roles and will simply do anything to help the team get to Omaha.
3) If LSU were to make it to Omaha and Tre were to tweak a hamstring, I bet you'd wish you had more options than a true freshman 1st baseman with little game time experience at that position.

Overall the position is much deeper than it’s been in some time, the coaching staff hit on every recruit they signed to and for the foreseeable future there should be stability here.

I don't think we've had this much talent at catcher since maybe 2009 when Micah Gibbs was the primary everyday starter and Sean Ochinko started a few games there.

Beloso will get a nod here or there, I expect mostly in midweek & in a pinch hitting role, but I don’t think he he going to be a huge factor in stealing anyone’s playing. Certainly not at 1B.

And again, outside of 2B & C, DH is the next most intriguing position battle. And for Beloso to see time there, will have to hit for power which he hasn’t done in a long time.

Pap and Romero in 2016 was pretty good, Scivicque and Pap in 2015 as well. Scivicque, Chinea and Moore in 2014.

Not really basing things on draft potential there, but those were some good years at catcher for us.

Not a good take...I don't think Beloso is taking any game reps away from anyone that will play significantly in the future this year. That said his leadership, knowledge of what the season will bring, and other situational knowledge is invaluable in the club house.

I'm certain Beloso knows his role here and realizes that most of the time he'll be more like a player coach than an actual player. He's along for the ride of what could be an incredible season.

Then we went for a while with a bunch of guys that were only around for one year and were replaced by first year guys.

I think Neal probably catches one weekend game to start the season. Milazzo probably catches Friday, Neal Saturday, Milazzo again on Sunday, and Travinski/Frey/Jones get some work in the midweek games.

I also think you're a little high on Milazzo. His defense is good, but it's not 75 on an 80 scale good. I'd go 65-70 on defense and arm, and 30-35 on his bat. Hopefully he improves there, but his bat has been really, really bad.

Look forward to this post every year, thanks for all you do Adam!

With what the rest of the lineup is projected to do, I really don't mind having a catcher that is a lesser hitter if he can play lights out defense, which Milazzo has shown in the past. Especially after watching last year where it was an adventure with passed balls and plays that a decent defensive catcher would be able to make.

Neal may push Milazzo at some point which I hope he does, but I would take a defensive stalwart behind the plate even if it means giving up some on the offensive end.

I know he only played 12games last year but he was showing improvement at the plate. If he can continue that he'll get the bulk of the starts
