re: Are we seeing the last of the "meaningless" bowl games?

Way too many bowl games!! This is the stupid participation ribbon nonsense.
No more than 4 teams in the playoff. Even if you expand it to 8 teams, 9 and 10 will complain that they deserved to be in.
Have 10 bowl games outside of the playoffs. No teams nominated by what conference you are in. May the best teams enter.

Might as well do a 16 team playoff.
The bye week for 1-4 virtually ensures one of those will win the championship.

Interesting. If that did take place which $$$$ says it will eventually, do conference champs get an auto placement or does the committee hand pick who goes in?

As long as there is money to be made, these sponsors and cities (of bowl games) will do whatever is necessary to make money. It’s the old saying “The rich get richer”, no matter what us true college football (greatest sport) fans think or feel, in the long run ITS all about the MIGHTY $$$ ALWAYS!

Yeah you are stupid why even have college football then. Someone can get hurt in any game or practice not just a bowl game. Them kids work they arse off to play in meaningless bowl games just don’t watch

quote:4 teams is too few. 8 is perfect - each Power5 conf champ gets in with 3 at large bids. Only adds one more round. And I have less of a problem with 9 and 10 arguing they should've gotten in, than teams 5 and 6, which are likely much better and more deserving teams.

I agree there are WAY too many bowls, but the bowls are private, so as long as they find a sponsor and ESPN agrees to televise it, it will make money. But most bowls are garbage. Hell, 84 out of 130 teams go bowling. It's a joke.

and now apparently entire teams opting out of games
What have I missed here? Is this in reference to someone besides A&M? They didn’t “opt out.”

I love the bowl games, and I watch all of them I can. I couldn't care less about the records of the teams; some wildly exciting games are played by 6-6 or 7-5 teams, and I get to see players and teams I might not see in the regular season. Most of them don't consider the games "meaningless" at all.
I watch because I love college football. Simple as that. People who are seemingly bothered by too many college football games on television are a sad lot.

The worst part of these "meaningless" bows is the fact that we are forced to watch them. We can't do anything else.

Gray Tiger's post was sarcasm.

FFS can we kill this stupid strawman already. The criticism that there are too many bowls has ZERO to do with them being on TV.

As long as there is money to be made, the bowls will continue.

Meaningless bowl games do need to go away, screw tradition the transfer portal and NIL aren't tradition and they added that shite to CFB. Why risk your best players getting hurt whether they are going to the draft or risk fuking up their next season in a game that's meaningless at the end of the year.
You kids that think this way make me sick to my stomach. You probably live your life wanting to opt out of life when things get a little hard. SMDH!

I can’t say it’s lame Clemson plays the Citadel or Alabama plays Mercer because I don’t have to watch?
So if you aren't forced to watch, why do you care?
How does such a match effect you personally?

If being personally effected by something is a requirement for having an opinion on that subject, then this site would suffer a drastic decline in traffic.

I agree. I hate to say it but playoffs, how it is set up now, has ruined college football as a whole.
Posted on 12/24/21 at 5:41 pm to UnclePat76
Easy solution. Bowl game has to pay players to participate. Better ranked bowl games pay more.

We hear so often that the Playoff has ruined college football and the bowl games, but it really doesn't make much sense. There are only two more teams involved than there were 20 years ago, so I hardly think the addition of two teams has ruined it for everyone else.
There are, however, a couple of things that have harmed the postseason in the playoff era:
The dominance of a few select teams, most notably Alabama, in the playoff. I'd prefer to never see another Alabama/Clemson game, and I'm beginning to feel the same about Alabama/Georgia.
Players opting out of bowl games. The Playoff has little to do with that. The BCS was even more restrictive with just two teams left standing, but players weren't opting out. Now it's just a case of "monkey see, monkey do" when it comes to opt outs.

The Independence Bowl, the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl and the Cricket Celebration Bowl drew better TV ratings than 10 NBA games last week.
You’re comparing an event that involved a couple dozen people, including coaches, to one that involves hundreds of people.
