I get your point. The issue will be who else is available and what experience those candidates have. Not so sure you give the reins of a program like LSU to a guy who has never held those reins any where. (See Mike Archer)
The perfect counterpoint is Jimbo Fisher at Fla St.

Based on what I read of Aranda, he sounds a lot like early Saban evals... smart, insightful, very organized and structured in his approach. Very even-keeled. Seems to be very admired within the football business, strongly considered to be an up-and-comer.

If you figure he's about 5 yrs away from running a major program, and our current coach has about 5 yrs left in the tank, it seems like a nice long-term investment. If, while he's here, you get the sense that he's not HC material, you still have a bright young DC on staff for awhile.

This much is correct.

In the sense that he's the first DC LSU has hired from Wisconsin, I'd agree.

I'm just glad Steele is gone. The defense was worse than the offense this past season.

Also, I'd rather he leave and get his first head coaching experience somewhere else, then come take over when Miles leaves

How fricking long you gonna saddle us with an old man who's day has passed him?

It occurred to me as well that Aranda might be Miles' successor, but I doubt he was hired as a "coach in waiting".

Miles doesn't plan to retire immediately but he isn't a spring chicken and will be gone, for better or for worse, sometime during the next ten years. So LSU should be looking for people who have the potential to step into his shoes.

I didn't say Aranda was hired to be a CIW when I started this thread, hasn't set foot on campus, and has proved nothing yet. However, my point was that he is an unusually intriguing young coach who apparently has coaches and scribes everywhere raving about his WOW factor. Great head coaches usually have the WOW factor, and it really doesn't matter if they have been HC's before. Jimbo, Sean Payton, Phil Fulmer, Gus Malzahn (one year at AR State doesn't count) etc. have gone from coordinators to HC and won championships. Let's see how he does.

Of course, it is "waaaaay" too early for any of this, but this hire sure does have a different feel to it.

If it were the les miles clause that kept him from taking the job last year, I'd say Alleva did his best to sabotage miles. This dude is gonna be a beast.

All that's been reported, nothing much about recruiting
abilities.. Seeing videos and listening to his sessions
I have a feeling that will not be an issue. Even to the most pertinent "Dads" locally in BR..lol

Way too early for that type of judgment, and I'm glad he is not an "official" coach-in-waiting. Those never work out.

But he is young and an up-and-comer.

He's only 38, so if he everything does go just right, he's the type of coach who could lead LSU for 25 years or so.

I don't think any signs point to that, and if defenses perform, he likely won't be here in a few years as he'll have already moved on to be a HC somewhere else by then.
