He essentially head coached 3 titles, but was only considered assoc. head coach for first two. Leon Barmore is grossly under appreciated in the women’s game. He is largely responsible for developing Mulkey as a coach, and suggested her as his replacement. La Tech president thought he knew better though, and the rest is history.
To that point, you notice she references Leon quite often, but never Sonja Hogg who was the actual HC for a couple of NC's (including the AIWA years) at Tech.

She invited Hogg back for a game this year recognizing all the coaches that had coached her during her playing career. She probably has a closer relationship with Baramore because she was his assistant for like 15 years.

Hogg was not a real coach but instead a figurehead. Barmore coached those teams.

Penrod, I never saw anything about it, didn’t see any big news about it. Very few are inducted and normally big news, didn't think she was actually IN IT. But I went ahead and corrected/removed it from my post. Thanks for letting me know.

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you meant she was not a future HOFer.

Can anyone come close to that in sports? I’m sure there are but can’t think of any off the top of my head.
I recently saw a resume comparison for KM and Dawn Staley. I did not realize DS’s resume was as good as it is. The difference is Staley was able to go to WNBA to extend her playing career.

Kim went straight to assistant coaching after La Tech playing career, because the AD convinced her to immediately go into coaching. So you can't compare apples to apples re: pro playing career. Agree that Staley is a unique coach, like Kim, both considered top 5 best coaches in the country.

First of all I hate Dawn Staley but I respect her accomplishment.
I only mentioned her pro career because DS has 3 olympic golds as a player and numerous other World Champion golds. This is way more than Kim because Dawn had a WNBA to go to that did not exist when Kim got out of playing. That extended Dawn's war chest list including numerous WNBA awards. She also has one olympic gold for HC of USA team. Dawn is 8 yrs younger than Kim and that time period made a huge difference for Dawn's opportunities post school.
As far as the AD convincing Kim to go straight to coaching out of school... where the hell else would she have gone at that time?

Staley didn't win NC at 1st head coaching job.
I'm all about pissing on Staley as much as the next person, but be fair. Her first job was freaking TEMPLE. A garbage sports school besides men's basketball, and she got them to NCAA's like 5 of her 6 years there. To them, that was as good as a national championship

I think they don’t like her because she is flamboyant and in your face intense!

If Mulkey was a flaming liberal she would be #1 on their list. Really pathetic they can’t look past politics.

I'm not "pissing" on anybody. The subject is about comparing the 2 coaches accomplishments (fairly and factually) as head coaches. They both started the same year 2000. Comparison number of national championships: Mulkey 4, Staley 2. Mulkey's first head coaching job in 2000 was Baylor, one of the worst WBB in the country. Their WBB only had 7 wins. Mulkey took them to their first NCAA-T in her 1st year. Mulkey's 1st year is regarded as the greatest turnaround in WBB history. Then took them to a NC in her 5th year. She took Baylor from bottom dweller nobody to NC contender every year. I did say previously that Staley is a unique, respected coach, and she and Mulkey are considered top 5 best coaches.

1. Who even knows if 34 real HC's were even interviewed for this article? Or what their real responses were.
2. Any poll that gives Lisa Bluter (HC, Iowa) any coaching credit is obviously skewed. Bluter is pathetic as a strategist. She gets credit for recruiting Clark but that's only because UConn, where Clark wanted to go, did NOT recruit Clark.
3. The only current HC to win a NC at two different schools is Kim Mulkey. That alone gives her a certain credibility no other HC has or had. Note: both schools, Baylor and LSU, had never won a NC prior to Kim Mulkey.

Kim was a coach on the floor as a player. She was a leader then taking La Tech to natl championships I believe she loved the school and her coaches and wanted to remain there and I believe she would have had they been able to match offers from bigger schools who started flashing larger dollars. Had she stayed at Tech they would have remained a big time women’s basketball program. She takes the job at Baylor and very quickly turns there program into a power house winning national championships there And now is doing the same at LSU. She is probably is 60 ish and has seriously been a winner all of her life, leading her High School team to state championships at Hammond to her recent women’s college championship last year. I don’t care what woke talking heads say she is a tremendous force for good and mentor of young wome and arguably one of the best coaches of any sport. She is the GOAT of women’s basketball.

LSU lost two bad SEC games, games we should NOT have lost. (State and Auburn). Had we won those two games, we'd be seeded better.
Am leaving now to see us play today! Geaux Tigers!
