Anyone else miss the old 6 team regionals?

I do, I have a lot of fond memories of days at the old Box, and the regionals were true tests of endurance.
Imagine what it'd be like today: you'd take basically the 2 regionals paired, take the top 2 seeds from each, one 3rd and 1 4th (because you still had automatic bids, some of them will be what are 4 seeds).
So, LSU, Kentucky, Oregon State, Indiana, West Virginia, Tulane.
Goal was to get to 3-0, at that point you're in the last round and then need to win once. If you make it to 2-1, you pair off against another 2-1 team to get to the finals, and then have to win twice (usually a doubleheader).
The fact that LSU made it to Omaha so many times in this format (and the others that constantly made it), going on your 4th or sometimes 5th game= that's what defined them as bluebloods, IMO. The current format barely pushes you out of your weekend lineup, for 2 weekends. The old format would test your limits. And yes, LSU made it out of the loser's bracket a few times, having to go 5-1 to do so.
Just imagine... you slip early, and still close the regional out against Kentucky or Oregon State, going with Money and Cooper as starters (assume you went Skenes, Floyd, Hurd, Coleman the first 4)
Those were wars back then. The current setup (which favors LSU greatly now), you go Skenes, Floyd, Cooper, then start over with Skenes and Floyd again, and maybe Cooper or Coleman.

It was fun to see 5 different teams and three games a day, but that bracket format was so fricking stupid.

I’ll never forget those tourneys. I was younger at the time and can remember making my parents stay for Tulane vs NLU or something random like that as well as all 9 innings of every game LSU played!
You’ve got me reminiscing now…

I was a frequent visitor back in the 1990's. I loved them. That was usually 4-5 very long days which often involved rain delays. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually went to three weeks of 3 game series before Omaha. Possibly playing 5 games in 4 days is just brutal on college pitching and it's the only weekend of the season they play that much.

Me. The only reason they changed the format is to limit the number of SEC teams in the CWS. Google it

96 GA tech game was a blast 29-13. Batted around twice in one inning.

Is there any footage online of those old regionals at the Box? Looking for a Todd Walker homerun..

I remember when he hit one dead center against South Alabama. It was a shot.
To the OP…one thing I remember is it was general admission and I would wait in line starting at 6-7 am to buy tickets while my gf would wait in line to get in the stadium. Once I got the tix she I would take her spot and she would go home and get ready. It made for some long days but they were a blast. One of my fondest memories was Rich Cordani hitting a big triple late against USC (they had some scary teams with the Boone’s) and my least fav was getting shut out 10 or 11-0 against CSF…that team was loaded with I think Kotsay and Nevin

I actually like the Regional and Super Regional format.

Nice topic and current look at it. Many on here prob have no idea what the old format used to be like.
Not to totally derail but, Hurd would been the GM 3 starter had it not been for the rain. He has become the most consistent pitcher outside Skenes obviously. JJ has shown his confidence in him the last few weeks. You failed to mention him in you Super rotation is why I bring it up.

At least it was one go around and you were in Omaha, but I prefer the present format.

If I remember this game correct only one player did not get a hit in that inning.

Yes, and I don’t like the two separate brackets in CWS. Should be full one bracket double elimination until it’s over; like it used to be. TV has nixed that because they didn’t know how the “final” would play out. Any that one game final with two bracket winners was stupid. You could have a team with one loss beat undefeated team for championship.

Guess you don’t like that 1993 National Championship

It was almost a given that we would win and then go to Omaha.
I think the only 2 we lost were’92 & ‘95. 2000 was the beginning of supers.
