Ancestors that fought in the Civil War?

Researching my family tree I found I had quite a few relatives in the war.
My closest grandfather was my great X2 grandfather, whom fought for the Union in the 37th KY. He was injured in Saltville, VA. I had a great x3 grandad whom fought for the CSA in the 4th Alabama cavalry. Another ancestor on dad’s side fought for the CSA in a Georgia unit.
How far back do you go until you find a relative that served?

VMI, with the aid of the South!

My great-great-great grandfather served with the 31st Alabama in the Western Theater. His regiment was at the Siege of Vicksburg. I’m pretty sure his brother served with the 14th Alabama in the Eastern Theater. He was wounded at Chancellorsville and killed at Spotsylvania Court House.

I have one Union soldier ancestor. He fought at Gettysburg. As far as I can tell, he is the only Civil War veteran ancestor I have.
My (now deceased) maternal Grandpa claimed that he had a great-grandpa or maybe great-great grandpa who fought for the CSA. But I’ve been unable to document such an ancestor in my genealogical research. My Grandpa was always full of tall tales. He also claimed to be something like 1/16 or 1/32 Cherokee, which genetic testing on our family has shown to not be the case.

Why was he killed?

A true American hero!
If your ancestors fought for the traitors you might wanna sit this one out.

If you lived in the south back then and had farmland, you would have fought for the south too.
Getting taxed more for your agriculture would have pissed you off cause the government was just being greedy

Yes my old family is from Georgia and I had one of my great grandfathers x2 I think that was with Lee at Appomattox. Cleaning out my parents house I found a ton of this stuff.

Have a handful of 3x grand fathers and Uncles that served for the confederate. None that served for POS Union that I can remember. I’ve got one ancestor that’s name is on the Declaration of Independence for the state of SC and another handful that served for the good guys.
My lineage is white maga af

Unless you owned a certain number of slaves. Then you didn't have to.

If Portland and the rest of Oregon decided to leave the US would you volunteer to go kill them to make them stay?

I looked that up a while back. I don't recall all specifics, but I do recall a couple of officers in LA regiments and 1 that was a surgeon. Now you have me thinking about this again, I need to go look it up and check it out again.

That’s more WWII than the civil war

I had a great Aunt that gave some fascinating documents that I still cherish.
A Will left by a distant grandfather in the 1700-1800's. In it he leaves designated slaves (by name) to his children.
A letter written home to Mississippi during the Civil War by a distant Uncle giving first hand account of what he's witnessed.
There's more but those 2 things stand out. Pretty cool.

Fair enough. But an all powerful Federal government ties directly back to the older war.

Yep. Quite a few on mom’s side fought for various Alabama units. I found my great x3 grandad’s info on Ancestry. Someone had uploaded unit rosters and other information.
My maternal grandmother’s side were all from northern Alabama and Ardmore, TN. A couple of the men left farming and moved to Louisville during the depression to work on the railroad.
