Having been to many Notre Dame games over the last decade, my opinion is that Notre Dame would often play to the level of their competition. Against good teams they would be focused and play well. Against inferior teams they would sometimes be mistake prone and not execute to the level of their ability. Drove me nuts sometimes watching that team.

As a life-long LSU fan, it reminded me of many games with Les Miles, where the team would make games exciting when it should have been a cake walk.

But they would usually win in the end. Brian Kelly likes winning. He's organized and the program will be very well run.

agreed, and that's my only current semi-worry with Coach "Matt" Kelly. It was pretty obvious.

Now, that does stem from the top. No doubt. But it can be corrected by the assistants. Even if CBK continues that trend, and it is an "if", I would give it a higher chance that the assistants under how they are operating at LSU would act as a prophylactic to that making it to the team's performance.

We don’t need any reviews; we can see his record with our own two eyes. That is the ultimate review.

Do we need a reviewer to tell us that Nick Saban is great? That Curly Hallman sucked?

Literally, every fan base save maybe for Bama and Ohio State feels this way about their coaches over time (and even those 2 have their moments). We naturally watch our teams through a much different, less objective lens than we do others.

If miles was winning 11 and up games a year with the same offensive production he never wouldve been fired. Stop acting like underachieving wasnt what got miles fired.

It was clear to everyone that Miles wasn't going to win 11 games without opening up the offense. It became equally clear that he wasn't going to change. 8-9 wins was typically the floor because his teams could dominate the line of scrimmage in those games, but in those other games where he ran into Alabama or an Auburn, Florida or maybe Arkansas or whoever else it was that year that could match up on the line, the inability to open up the offense and develop QBs guaranteed he was going to lose a couple of those games and that the ceiling was not much more than the floor.

It’s very simple, Miles was fired because the talent kept increasing and the results kept going in the opposite direction. He had hit his ceiling years earlier and began to decline.

One thing to consider about BK's stint at ND

Historically bad stretches for both USC and Michigan, and 5 ACC games most every year.

If you want to feel good about Brian Kelly watch the 2017 - 2021. If you want to see some red flags look at 2016

playing down to your opponents

I keep seeing where ND fans say this, but just take look at Kelly’s record as a favorite. It’s like 40-1 in his time there. How can you say he played down to opponents if he almost never lost games to teams he was supposed to beat? You don’t truly deserve that label unless you drop some of those games to lesser opponents.

I have to disagree with this. Miles piled up talent at certain positions, but completely dropped the ball when it came to the OL, DL, LBs and QB recruiting down the stretch of his career. We had some glaring holes from 2013-15 because of this and that’s a big reason why we started losing more games.

He lost to Navy twice, he also lost to Tulsa, South Florida and Duke. All of those games he was heavily favored

It was thrown out by someone on 247 that I heard repeated a couple of days ago.

I looked it up and it was 40-4 since 2015…if you omit their terrible 2016 outlier season. That’s fudging the numbers, but the guy I heard it from didn’t mention that part.

Still, 22 of his last 23 as a favorite at ND over two seasons is nothing to sneeze at. Miles and O didn’t bounce back after they hit rough spots, but Kelly definitely did.

I think if you look at his first year in 2010 that had losses to Navy and Tulsa you would find that he wasnt necessarily big favorites.

Miles last 2 years had the most NFL draft picks ever at LSU and 17 of his recruits either started or played significant snaps on the 2019 team which surpassed that record for draft picks. OL, DL and LBs, some of the best in the NFL BTW, were part of these classes. His last 4 recruiting classes ranked 6th, 2nd, 5th and 3rd but the success did not correspond.
