An honest review of Brian Kelly at Notre Dame ...

With all the conjecture and talk about Brian Kelly and the 2022 LSU season, things can swing out of proportion one way or another depending on your bias or perspective. So how did Kelly's Notre Dame team compare to LSU over the course of his time there 2010-2021.

The average recruiting ranking for Notre Dame over the course of that time was 12, LSU was 6.5. The average yearly record over the course of that time was identical at 9-3. Notre Dame had three post season appearances, LSU had 2. Notre Dame had one Heisman finalist, LSU had 2. LSU vs Notre Dame head to head Notre Dame was 2-0. NFL Draft picks number was 59 for Notre Dame and 93 for LSU.

Going through the year by year record it looks like there were many close wins against some "inferior" talent teams. But IMO the difference between being ranked between 12-30 is not as impactful as it is being ranked 6-12. Blue Chip Ratio does matter in the end to winning it all. I think with College Football how you perform in your biggest games and rivalries speak a lot to how you are perceived. This is what I found with Notre Dame since 2010.

USC 8-3
Stanford 5-6
Michigan 3-4
Michigan St 4-2
Miami (FL) 3-1
Pittsburgh 6-1
Purdue 6-0
Florida St 3-2
Texas 1-1
Oklahoma 1-1
Clemson 1-3

SEC 3-4
Bowl Games 5-5
Ranked Opponents (Including Bowls) 23-23

One can reason that Notre Dame & LSU were very comparable programs in terms of winning production. Notre Dame had less NFL talent, LSU plays a tougher league / schedule. LSU had greater top end success obviously with 2019.

Brian Kelly did an objectively AWESOME job at Notre Dame considering the disadvantages and challenges to compete at the elite level.

Do I think Brian Kelly is perfect? No. Do I think he is primed for a run like Nick Saban? No. But one can see with LSU resources he is no doubt going to win a ton of games here. But I think there will be frustrating moments for sure. I am 100% sold on his organization and ability to build a program that's consistent and winning. I have been VERY encouraged at his recruiting efforts. Game-day coaching ability is still TBD at the SEC level week in week out.

But it's reasonable to think LSU should have a floor of 9-3 during Brian Kelly's time here, and will likely reach a title game or two.

They couldn’t get great CBs, WRs, and interior DLs at Notre Dame. That’s the difference.

9-3 got Led Miles fired. 9-3 is unacceptable.

All I have is my anecdotal experiences. I live outside of South Bend and my wife along with her entire family are diehard ND fans. We go to a couple of games a year usually - her family has season tickets.

They 100% bitched about Kelly almost exactly as much and for the same shite as we bitched about Orgeron and Miles for.

No halftime adjustments
playing down to your opponents
wasting glaringly obvious opportunities
team looking unprepared
shite QB carousel
you name it

They knew he was a great coach but they were over him. He had outlived his welcome and it had become apparent they were never going to win an NC with him. They didn't want him fired, but they were relieved when he moved on.

Personally, I think Kelly is a great coach and did wonders with ND. Excited to see what he can do at LSU. He's not going to start a dynasty, but I honestly do expect a National Championship in the next 5 years or so.

Not Marcus Freeman on the other hand. well, that's a different thread.

If he’s not mailing in the effort at this point in his career like Spurrier did, he will be fine. More than half the battle is having players. In game coaching remains to be seen.

9-3 is not what got Miles fired. Continuing to run an outdated offensive system & refusing to change is what got Miles fired.

Les not able to adapt got Les fired. Having a QB throw under 200 yards a game got Les fired.

Though they had a few solid seasons here and there, form 1993-2009 ND was a slightly above average program (relative to the power conference teams). In his 3rd season Kelly had ND playing for a national championship for the first time in nearly 25 years. He would then lead them to two playoff appearances. In the last 4 seasons under Kelly ND lost a combined 6 games. The landscape of college football has changed significantly since the 70's, 80's, 90's, and Kelly took ND as far as he could take the program...and further than anyone had taken the program since the early 90's.

ND fans look at Kelly like we looked at Les at the end of his run. That is, the HC was holding the team back from getting over the championship hump. The DIFFERENCE is that LSU was a championship program BEFORE and AFTER Miles. ND was, at best, inconsistent prior to Kelly's arrival.

The LSU program has proven it can be a "kingmaker" in terms of coaches. 3 HCs (Saban, Miles, Orgeron) with middling to no success prior to LSU. All left the school with national championships. For ND, they had three coaches following Lou Holtz prior to Kelly's. In 13 years the program's crowing achievement was winning the Hawaii Bowl.

ND fans first laughed at the thought of a coach like Kelly leaving ND. Then they were angry he did. Now they are selling his departure as a great thing because their new HC will finally get them over the hump. Of course, that's all to hide the underlying realization that came from Kelly's departure. That if a HC wants to win a national championship LSU is a much more likely place to do it than ND. And that is not just subjective homerism. Only ONE D-1 school in America has had three straight HC's win national championships...and it isn't Notre Dame

This narrative is wrong and needs to enc. Going 2-7 against Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Alabama is what got Les fired. The program was faltering and headed in the wrong direction. And another nail in Les' coffin, he could not keep away from young, large chested blond coeds. If your going to act in a disgusting manner, you better be a winner.

Man who gives a shit? Ed Orgeron won 10 games at Ole Miss but he won a National Championship at LSU. I really don’t care what ND fans think or thought. I care what BK does at LSU and he can start by kicking the crap out of Florida State. AND he should.

Utter bull shite.
If miles was winning 11 and up games a year with the same offensive production he never wouldve been fired. Stop acting like underachieving wasnt what got miles fired.

Lol... so if he beat those teams but loses to miss st, auburn and florida he wouldnt have gotten fired?

You say the narrative is wrong and then immediately bring up not winning enough.

Zero accusations at the time.

he went 5-3 in the sec in 2015.
We were 4-4 or worse 1 time from 2009 until he got fired.

I dont understand why the standard is changing but losing 3 games a year was considered under achieving under miles.
