Didn't Altuve swear up and down that he knew nothing about the stealing of signals? Said he would never cheat.
It seems like reversing his position is a sign of weaseldom.

for me it was always an ego and power play by MLB because Rose never bet against the team, so he had to always give it his best...not to justify, but the punishment seems harsh
That's one way to look at it, but another way is how did his betting on his team affect his decisions during games to better ensure his team covered the spread? Maybe leaving a pitcher in longer than he would otherwise, risking potential injury.
quote:
Those critical of Rose's behavior, including Ohio's own Hall of Fame baseball reporter, Hal McCoy, have observed that "the major problem with Rose betting on baseball, particularly the Reds, is that as manager he could control games, make decisions that could enhance his chances of winning his bets, thus jeopardizing the integrity of the game."
It's also worth noting that betting as a player/manager is akin to insider trading. He knew things the betting public wouldn't possibly know and could use that to his advantage when making his bets, not to mention he was wrapped up with the freaking mob in his gambling. Records showed he was several hundred grand in debt when he was banned from baseball. The mob-connected bookie he worked with was sentenced to federal prison.
And no one can definitively assume he only bet on his team. We're basing that purely on what Rose said and a notebook seized from his bookie (who's to say he didn't place bets with other bookies). This is the same guy who denied he bet at all for almost 20 years. He didn't "come clean" until he did so in his autobiography released in 2004. Further, he still denied betting as a player....until that court sealed notebook was discovered in 2015 that showed he did, in fact, bet on games as a player.
Not trying to get on a soap box, but I just find the "he only bet on his team" to be a short-sighted argument for him.

Peter Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.
Yes he should

He bet ON his team.
Still doesn't mean he didn't manipulate the game. He could do things as a manager that he normally wouldn't do to try to get a win on the night he bet on his team.

I just saw the article that I linked in the OP from the online version of the Baton Rouge Advocate.
ETA: I do remember someone accused Altuve of not letting his teammates tear his shirt off when he hit a walk off homerun because they thought he was hiding some electronic device under his jersey and he denied that was the reason. He said something about being embarrassed to bare his chest, or something like that.

Bregman is a colossal douche, but he’s good at baseball
100% of the people on this board would agree with the above statement if he didn’t play for LSU

For those that have followed this, a CF camera picking up the signs from the C has been a given.
Acknowledged by all.
That knowledge being used to signal the batter about an incoming pitch using electronics has NEVER been acknowledged by anyone.

A video camera feeding into the dugout is an electronic piece of equipment.

You're completely wrong here. You don't think there is a huge difference when you know a curve ball is coming and if you know a change up is coming?
This. Ask anyone who played even remotely competitive baseball. Huge advantage for the hitter.

What did he say to you that makes you believe he's "a colossal douche"??

If he had an unfair betting advantage over the general public, why was he hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt?

Thank you for pointing out that the camera and monitor are electrical devices.
Sorry I felt the need to mention buzzers
Obviously, I'm the only one who read it that way.

which makes no sense. Its time for baseball to realize that Pete has gotten a far harsher treatment than about anyone else.
heck even the black sox got a worse treatment. Match fixing vs Match fixing by cheating... one is worse but not by the margin that baseball ruled upon

because he bet on a lot more than just baseball games, not to mention a fat, several hundred thousand dollar debt from the IRS after he was convicted of tax evasion for his failure to report not only gambling earnings but also earnings from selling autographs and memorabilia.

It's 2020
We have the technology, they should do the same thing they do in Pro Football and let the coach talk directly to the catcher and pitcher via earpiece etc. It doesn't need to be that hard. We're not in 1890 anymore.

All Ayers need to be suspended 1 yr if not longer, titles vacated and owner forced to sell to set this modern blacksox scandal right. Also, Bertram, Cora and the manager banned for life
