I’m in sales and not only do all my friends who I rarely see these days reach out to congratulate the Tigers, I have customers who reach out and congratulate them. Lots of people who are casual observers like what LSU represents.

100 percent. People out here couldn't believe I wanted the bar to put one of their thirty TVs on the Saints game while the Dodgers were playing.
Exactly. The Dodgers are EXTREMELY popular in Los Angeles and SoCal in general. There's a reason they lead the major leagues in attendance every year. In fact, having been born and raised here in LA County (I have two degrees from LSU), I can tell you that the Dodgers were EASILY the most popular team in town until the Lakers won their championship in '85 over the Celtics. I remember before that, when the Lakers won their titles in '80 and '82, they had 500K fans at their parade. When the Dodgers won the '81 World Series, they had TWO MILLION fans at their parade.

I live in San Diego and SoCal is so Luke warm on college sports that I think they appreciate how much southern states fans support their team.
I regularly get mentions from stage at church after a big LSU win, get comments at the gym or even grocery store when I wear LSU gear.
San Diego State basketball is as close to SEC support but still not close.

Most of the students wouldn't know the difference between a baseball and a volleyball. I'll bet the vast majority never attend a sporting event in their entire four years.

My father, who I just lost last month traveled for work. He was almost always wearing something LSU.
He was always telling me stories about being approached by folks across the country, making conversation about the Tigers

It’s in know small part to things like packing Omaha’s stadium and buying a kings ransom worth of Jell-O shots. We’re a legendary fan-base to go along with great teams.

hard not to love LSU, and that is beyond my purple and gold bias.
LSU is usually pretty good in most sports, travels well, has fun and friendly fans, and provides a great atmosphere home and away.
The athletes all seem to have an unbelievable level of swagger and are always great ambassadors for the program when they leave.
we also have the most bad arse colors too

I definitely do think the fun colors like purple and gold as u mentioned helps people opinions about an appealing school as well as most people who have ever had a friend or acquaintance from Louisiana knows the fun and food we have so it’s their way to Tag along with the fun folk.
LSU may not have the money schools like A&M have, but our winning culture and tradition is obviously much tougher to buy than many think.

Good story. I always wear an LSU shirt when travelling and get "Go Tigers" in every airport. The golden years for LSU started a while ago, but the 2 natties this year are keeping it going. Need another in football soon.

The golden years for LSU
In 1991 it had been 32 years since LSU won a major sport natty, and '59 was the first. Since then the biggest gap has been 10 (93, 96, 97, 00, 03, 07, 09, 19, 23) and there have been ten of them. The last 30 years have been amazing!

I think most people I have met outside La had a positive image of LSU. Guys like Shaq, Angel, Burrow, Skenes and Crews , and now I will add Sandra Smith, elevate that image.

I imagine with the number of sports teams in California, college and pro, there are a couple of factors involved in low attendance, smaller college venues, etc...... the cost factor (money) for people to attend games, the traffic nightmare probably associated with trying to get to games anywhere out there, and what team(s) to become a fan of, with so many to choose from??? We don't have those kinds of problems in Louisiana, except for the costs for some of us!

I had similar conversations up here in DC yesterday and today. I wear LSU related attire pretty regularly but the last few years have been the first time people have made small talk about LSU on a regular basis

The LSU brand carries well.

Maybe homerism, but i believe LSU has the cool factor on the national level of USC, Ohio State, Miami etc.
The difference is, those schools also garner hate for different reasons...that LSU doesn't get from fans
Also doesnt hurt that our alums are generally pretty awesome...and on TV a LOT

Even though the Rams were in LA first, when the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn they were a big name in America's most popular sport. The NBA really didn't skyrocket in national popularity until the 80's (largely led by the Celtics/Lakers rivalry). That means the Dodgers are the most ingrained franchise in LA sports culture.
There may not be a more perfect place to play baseball than California. I guess really SoCal specifically. The climate with mostly pleasant temps and relatively little rain allows it to be played pretty much year round. It's a bit more difficult to be a great baseball player from, say, Michigan, where it is too damn cold to play outside for 4-5 months of the year

I live 50 miles south of LA in Newport Beach. Married into an all-LSU family so I've adopted the Tigers!he
Went to the farmers market last week wearing my LSU hat and my lettuce guy starts up about the CWS. Tells me he grew up in Omaha and that the LSU fans used to just dominate the whole event. Said the tailgating was legendary. Then said something about how we got screwed when they changed stadiums and there was no more tailgating? Not sure what that's all about but you could tell he had a great vibe about the Tigers.
