re: 3 stars on defense are why LSU was not top 5 this year or last

Gio Lopez (USA QB) had his 2nd best Passer Rating game this season on us when he plays FCS level schools each week
He had his second lowest output of the season and threw for almost 100 yards under his average. Which is pretty good considering they had a 30+ point first half deficit and playing from behind the whole game.
quote:
UCLA - QB put up nearly 3x the passing yards on LSU vs Oregon, had his best game by far vs LSU, had his 1st highest QBR and 1st highest Rtg vs LSU
He had a good first half. He did absolutely nothing in the second half
quote:
Nicholls St QB had his best passing % game vs LSU
He had 113 yards passing dude

The only way things will change is recruiting better. That is the only solution. Especially DBs.
Before writing this think piece did you take a glimpse at our 2025 recruiting class? We got the no.1 corner in the country in DJ Pickett, a top 10 corner in Kade Phillips and a 4 star in Aidan Anding

That’s not true at all. Where did you pull that from?

USC - put up nearly 400 yards passing. Miller Moss had his 1st highest Passer Rtg game vs LSU, 30.0 points above any other game he's played this season
There were morons saying Miller Moss would be a Heisman contender after he torched LSU’s defense
Dude is about to get benched

They scored 10 points - their lowest by far this season. I couldn't care less what the fricker's QBR is. We know the DBs are a problem. Doesn't take much research to be fully aware of that. We can hope that the Bye Week was big for the young guys that are starting to get more playing time, but it will likely continue being below our standard.

I mean, Burns isn’t a 3 star.
Ryan isn’t a 3 star.
Our biggest issues aren’t 3 star players. it’s that all of our safeties are either bad or really young

So you are telling me Kentucky has a bunch of 4 and 5 stars on defense?

It’s definitely a lack of talent and poor evaluation. As i said before, the highlight tapes need evaluated thoroughly. Not just the athlete we're recruiting, but the quality of the opponent they are playing against as well.

Our 3 stars are a lot better than everyone else’s 3 stars.

I’d say it’s personnel choices more than anything, mainly Burns being out there. I’d love to see some combination of Gilbert, Spears and Allen, those guys look like they can make plays.

Major played at Georgia as a true freshman. On a loaded defense with NFL talent everywhere. He did not suck at Georgia.
As others have commented, development once a kid gets on campus is just as important as their rating when they walked in the building. Hell, all of those DBs listed were getting recruited by the who's who of college football. We didn't just flat out miss on a dozen guys, we missed on who were coaching them up.

I get your point, and we should have absolute monsters on the D Line and DB.
But other schools did better with similar recruits to LSU in 2023, so it's not ALL talent. In fact ALL schools save Mercer did better than LSU.
Last Year:
Miss St. (3 Stars) Held them to 17
Tulane (3 Stars) Held them to 37
Vanderbilt (3 Stars) Held them to 33
Auburn (3/4 Stars) Held them to 28
Arkansas (3 Stars) Held them to 27
LA Monroe (2/3 Stars) Held them to 35
GA Tech (3 Stars) Held them to 48
(A&M, BAMA, UGA, and Penn State all averaged 4 star or better, so left them out, but they held them to less than 48 as well)
ALL OF THESE would have beat Ole miss last year, LSU scored 49.
The ONLY school to give up more than 48 points was Mercer. Even at 3 stars, we were equally talented to the above schools. So scheme does matter quite a bit.
You can't tell me LA Monroe, Vandy, GA Tech, had better talent, even in a "Down" LSU cycle. Yes we are down, we are correcting that, but we can coach these guys up better (Bo is doing that) and cover it with scheme. (Baker is beginning to do that)

It’s just silly that the default excuse is always “muh no talent” when that’s been disproven so many times before. Look at the 2020 defense, arguably the worst in program history, all season all we heard was “we just don’t have any talent, well 12 of those players are in the NFL now. LSU is always in the top 5% or so of teams in terms of talent, this excuse is just lazy.

Our best player on defense (Swinson) was a 3 star

sucked at Georgia transfer 3 star

Both these guys were 4 stars before and after transferring
You cave give them your own rating to support your argument

Defense is putrid. Almost as embarrassing as last season.
Posted on 10/7/24 at 10:09 am to Madking
I agree with this as well. Burns looks like a head case out there. For example against S.A , You know the pass is coming, why arent you ready and falling all over the place as a senior? It gets a tad comical sometimes
Posted on 10/7/24 at 11:43 am to Saunson69
This all true. Recruiting matters. More than star ratings, I tend to look at who are the offers coming from. Seems like that is just as important.

No Doubt that our Talent on D is not Upper Level SEC. Baker is doing a good job so far scheming to hide those deficiencies! We need this years recruiting class in Uniform Right Now!

This defense is weak at multiple positions and thin at others.
This isn’t news. We knew this last year, we knew there wasn’t an influx of talent this year.
It’s a multi-year rebuild if the defense.
