So your saying with what Saban did at Bama, He wouldn’t have done it at LSU?

No. He wouldn’t have. He maybe wind 3-4 titles at LSU because he is not getting a rematch like he did in 2011 to give him a title. He’s not getting all the questionable calls in his favor over and over again.

He’s not able to cheat as much in recruiting, which Bama was allowed to do based on what the SEC has done for generations with them and their hias towards Alabama.

There’s almost a zero chance we win it all in 2003, 2007 and 2019 without Saban taking the job in 1999.

There was a reason LSU hadn’t won a national championship in 45 years prior to 2003 and was very much considered a coaching graveyard.

He would’ve won three in a row in 05, 06, 07

That’s almost guaranteed

Now I’m sad again

—LOL. Mac & Arnsparger say otherwise. Plus if LSU was a graveyard, why would Saban move there from Mich State?

This was literally the national thought. Think what you want, but it’s true.

~$1mil+ per year, Emmert, and sleeping giant is what brought Saban to LSU.

Btw Mac inherited the job after Dietzel left to coach Army and ended with fans championing his departure. Arnsparger couldn’t wait to get out of the politics of coaching at LSU. He wanted nothing more to do with it. Not sure you’re making the case you think you are.

No he wouldn’t have. 2005 is USC-Texas no matter what. He also is not handling Katrina or Rita the way Miles did. Those types of things are not Saban’s strong suits.

I think people assuming anything after 2004 are wish casting.

Emmert

I get what you’re saying drizz, but you’re missing the biggest piece to your own puzzle.

Had Saban stayed at MSU for whatever reason, or already taken the Giants job, Emmert was still going to find a really good coach.

The Dean politics were already being put in the back seat, which Emmert proved by bringing in Saban over his head.

I’m not sure exactly how Emmert’s hiring came about, but he had a history of bringing massive strategic planning and building projects to university systems, so clearly the ball was already moving in that direction before Saban arrived.

Yes, he was seemingly the perfect piece to complete the puzzle and keep the feet to the fire on bringing Emmert’s “Flagship Agenda” to life, but many of the projects Saban is credited with were already underway when he arrived.

So obviously things worked out perfectly, but the “graveyard” you’re speaking of was going to be reversed under Emmert one way or another. Would have been interesting to see who else he would have gone to if Saban was off the table.

Stoops was just hired at OU the year before, but I’m guessing another name along those lines could have worked out pretty well too.

Think maybe Mark Richt in purple and gold instead of red and white.

Or if you really want to get frisky, Pete Carroll was on the market in the winter of 1999

What?

Are you really comparing a season after Covid with destructive storms that flooded major parts of New Orleans and displaced 800,000 people in a short time?

What Saban did in 2020 was convince a few of his players not to go pro and some not to sit out. That’s about it.

Yeah a shortened Covid season with limited fan access is definitely the same as dealing with 2 of worst hurricanes in modern time.

I agree. Emmert saw the potential value of a top tier football program at LSU. That was a sharp contrast to Joe Dean who was only looking to be in the black and was short sighted in long term development. The hypothetical of who LSU would have gotten outside of Saban is interesting, but to your point the tide was turning, we weren’t going bargain basement hunting any longer.

Do you think Les is a better coach than Saban?
