re: What’s the story on 2025 5* WR Caleb Cunningham out of MS?

I’ve lived in MS for a long time and I still can’t explain it. Kids have no problem going to Alabama or Auburn if they are highly rated. I think it’s cultural in their mind. Alabama seems like a more successful Mississippi while Louisiana is a weird culture. They have this reverence (admiration) for Alabama and know they will never get to their success. But, LSU is seen as beatable and on the same level.

If we get on campus he will be a tiger

Lebby kept the WR coach which is the only holdover from Leach’s staff

He's been to campus at least 4 times already.

He came to 2 LSU games this season, but he is going to go to State. That’s where his heart has been from the beginning.

The classy bas a lot of LSU fans. Sadly the football isn’t that great

20 years ago it was. LSU came in and filled their cart full. Now you have Alabama and a much stronger and organized Ole Miss.

I always thought it was the Stark Vegas bagmen or the Oxford banks that on-the-low-down kept the big fish in MS. So when NIL deals became a thing, I thought it'd be an equalizer & loosen up their stranglehold on LSU targets in MS. I guess not. Now, I'm thinking it's just big-fish-in-a-small-pond brainwashing.

This. Having played ball in MS in 08-11, this was the mindset of some of our better players that signed or were recruited. It continue to be that way when I was a high school sports writer in the Hattiesburg area during 2014-2017. For some odd reason, Alabama was viewed almost in the same light as Ms State and Ole Miss, like it was an almost in-state school. Never ever understood why it was treated that way and why most guys wouldn’t even consider LSU or Tennessee or even Auburn. They’d only go there as last resorts.
But it’s also probably just a small town Mississippi mindset that infects the entire state and every culture. To most recruits, them making it to MS State or Ole Miss is MAKING it. Anything outside of the state, outside of Tuscaloosa, is seen as strange and weird. There’s just lots of loyalty and stupidity and a lack of motivation to want more than what Ole Miss and State can bring you. Don’t get me wrong, they produce a little bit to the NFL but it’s like every other recruit in any other state views college as a means to an end: getting to the NFL somehow. Meanwhile most MS recruits are just happy to have made it to Ole Miss, MS State or Alabama. It’s fricking sad

Mostly this, yeah. A good chunk of high school coaches 100% preach it. I’m sure they’re not the only state to do it, but a lot of MS kids are fricking brainwashed by the small town culture of the state. Hell, most of them probably think Tuscaloosa is a big city

All these recruits are told:
1. Stay in state, you’ll be THE guy on campus. Be a big fish in a small pond.
2. They’re told that they’ll be at a disadvantage if they go to LSU or Alabama or Auburn and won’t get the same opportunities as in-state kids at those schools.
3. Or they’re scared of competition. I remember Markell Pack (played at Purvis) flipped from Florida State to Ole Miss late because the coaches (both Ole Miss and at Purvis) told him he’d eventually start at Ole Miss and he’d never start at FSU, no one would watch him play, etc. Don’t think he ever started at Ole Miss either and was a good high school player.

MS is still "slim pickings" when it comes to recruiting. A few here and there, so I like our presence in TX better when it comes to out-of-state...

I think it’s more of a family pride kind of thing. Being close to home matters a lot.

Agreed. Their kids are pretty dang loyal though, considering how bad the MS schools have been

Since Lebby was hired State has got out to a lead. That kid’s film is impressive. He’s double or triple covered almost every play.

Black culture in Louisiana just prides itself on being from Louisiana.

Mississippi kids are notoriously hard to pull out of the state.
I feel like they are more inclined to go to Bama, but we have had our share of good ones. They are tough to pull though, as compared to our success in Texas.

Scroll down a tad to the #7 WR. Kaliq Lockett from Texas. We have more success from there, plus he's rocking an LSU hoodie in his pic. That has to mean something, right?
