Only thing to learn is money talks. Everyone knows that.

If the No. 1 player in the country says I want to play for LSU, you absolutely make the best play possible to bring that QB to LSU. Especially a QB.

Back up plan is the portal. Plenty of eggs there.

We can be critical of Kelly for multiple things, but I give him zero fault for losing Underwood.

He just ran into a desperate program with a rich alum willing to overpay a local prospect.

Didn’t say they did anything wrong. Just wondering if there’s a way to avoid or at least lessen the impact of something like that happening in the future

We don’t know that. What if he’s the freak everyone says he is?

Then at least he is in another conference and he will likely only be a two-year starter. He will not make or break LSU's success in the next three years, especially being able to pull from the portal.

Underwood screwed LSU out of a couple years of QB recruiting.

In the Portal era, that's not always the worst thing in the world. Every major QB recruit and portal transfer is now going to realize that there is an opportunity at LSU, which is now a program that is pumping out Heisman winners and NFL first rounders.

Easy to say until we’re lining up across from him

If he is lining up across from LSU it means they are in the playoff, which would be a success.

so don't recruit the best players?

plenty of top qbs have told teams not to recruit other qbs over the years...not saying this happened but he did have the number 1 player in the country committed for a long time...then he flipped for a ridiculous amount of money

But what, if anything, can you do about it?

Nothing can be done if someone with far more resources is willing to pay what you can't. It is really that simple.

You have to get really good at finding the Burrow and Daniels of the transfer portal and also getting them. They aren't demanding high dollars because they haven't produced at an elite level.

Incredibly difficult to do as there aren't that many players out there of great talent to begin with.

I didn’t say don’t recruit them. Just wondering if there’s anything else he could do to, let’s say, soften the blow maybe

You recruit two top tier Qb's. Saban (2004) at LSU recruited Robert Lane from Neville High School. Robert was also projected to be taken in the MLB draft. Saban couldn't/wouldn't go all in on Lane, and be left without a QB in that class. So Saban also recruited Jamarcus Russell. Signed Russell and Lane went to Ole Miss. Lane wanted to be the only QB recruit for LSU that season, but Saban made sure he had a backup plan.

Don't forget Matt Flynn in this scenario. Flynn was the second QB in the class with Lane. The staff continued to recruit Jamarcus, who was a signing day decision, by that time Lane had already decommitted from LSU over the weekend prior to signing day and committed to Ole Miss.

That he needs to collect more receipts to compete on the top recruits or they won't plan on making it to the finishing line. I think we did the right thing walking away from the two biggest payouts that we didn't match. All of it is a challenge at that level and still manage the current locker room.

Cannot and will not happen under current NIL and transfer portal rules. Maybe score a high 4* QB and then perhaps a 3* that could possibly develop. But having to spread the cheese to retain and recruit your roster every year doesn't leave a lot for loading up at one position.

There’s nothing you can do in this HS class when the #1 QB flips like 2 weeks before signing day. QBs generally commit early so it’s not like there are other top QBs waiting in the wings. I looked right after the Underwood flip and something like the top 40ish QBs were already committed.

Now, you can certainly try to flip one of those commits. But again the problem is you don’t really have time to do so. You can’t really make that push while you have the #1 QB committed, and you don’t have time to make that push when he decommits 2 weeks before ESD.

So yeah, there ain’t a whole lot you can do to lessen the blow in this class. Here’s what you can do:

- Maintain relationships with other QB targets throughout the recruiting cycle. There’s some nuance here because you don’t want the guy who you already have committed to freak out, but you still need those relationships. Some of those players’ coaches will leave/get fired at end of season. Some of them will be in the portal in a year or two. I would like to think our staff already does this.

- Keep taking a HS QB in every class. Some won’t pan out. Some will transfer. But that’s your backup plan. Our problem in this instance is that Collins already decided to leave, and Hurley is only 17. But we have been taking a QB each year.

- If needed, transfer portal.

Well, I’m sure #1 player/QB scared off others. Then you keep a really good QB on the back burner in case it fails? Hey, if he backs out at the last hour, come on over. Me love you long time - LOL
