I’m pretty impressed with the scores-teams don’t seem negatively affected by the forced time off/slow start to the season/COVID protocols.

Am curious to see if the California schools get going soon or just cancel their seasons...

Here are my award predictions for the week:
SEC gymnast: trinity Thomas
SEC specialist: haleigh Bryant
SEC freshman: Victoria nguyen

I really hope they don’t automatically give gymnast of the week to highest score because this year there are not many who can compete with trinity. I love her gymnastics but I don’t want her monopolizing the awards all season. Victoria did great this past weekend and josie angeny on her very 1st aa got a 39.425. I hope they spread the love but I won’t hold my breath.

Any of y'all concerned with Dunne's dismount? This is suppose to be a layout.

Here is Alyona's

When you can't even do the dismount with half way decent form, it shouldn't even be an option. Its a form deduction before even landing it.

I am. The shape is not ideal. She pikes it at the start of the dismount as well.

Out of those doing the DLO dismount:

Johnson - textbook
Dunne - good height but poor form
Arenas - lack of height
Alyona - poor shape and technique

Then again, Dunne and Alyona had notorious dismount issues when they were competing elite. Jay has his work cut out for him.

Why can't Dunne do this?

Still better than her double layout. Alyona is the rare case I fully support the double tuck after the pirouette for the sake of execution.

Kennedi Edney had a textbook double layout that was pencil straight. Finnegan wasn't as straight but it still looked like a double layout overall. Alyona and Dunne are full on piking it and there is no way around the judges on that.

That full twisting double back dismount looks better for sure.

It's the same one Dunne struggled with during elite but she's doing it with a different technique in the TikTok video.

Dunne - 2018 Dismount

In 2018, she was doing the full twist in the first salto. In the TikTok video, she's doing it in the second salto — the same way Durante does it.

My best guess is she's able to land her DLO better than the full twisting double back.

I still think Dunne can consistently score in the 9.875-9.90 range even with the piking in her dismount as long as she hits her handstands. So I’m not too terribly concerned with her.

Now Alyona....I think her deductions are more obvious because it’s very whippy and she often takes large steps. Plus she’s a much taller gymnast.... so she has that working against her.

Keep in mind that LSU is trying to replace three bar routines from last year, Edney being the biggest loss. Kai was very consistent after the first two meets, and Ruby was Ruby. But I’m kinda happy that LSU had a rough meet Friday night. It had to be a wake up call for Jay if nothing else. I think the gymnasts will be more focused this week. I expect Jay to make several lineup changes for pride/ego sake.

Can someone get this 2022 gymnast on LSU’s recruiting radar?

Looks like she was injured last couple year but just qualified for nastia with a 38.9

I’m also a fan of Olivia Orengo (class of 2024). She attends Twin City Twisters (Maggie Nichols, Grace McCallum, Tori Tatum, Olivia Trautman). Such raw talent. You can find her videos on Instagram.

Also guys, the full interviews of Bryant, Johnson, and Clark can be found on wafb.com. Looks like Bryant will indeed be in the AA for the upcoming meets. Sorry I couldn’t post the link.

I too was disappointed with this early season performance. For the past several years (or two at least), we have been fighting against falls (or basically falls) in multiple rotations. That is never a recipe for success. We will have to figure out something for Schennikova, because her errors two large errors (vault and floor) cost significant points and momentum, aside from the usual issue of uneven bar dismounts. However, this was her first time doing multiple events, so I am hoping her confidence and performance improve over time. Where I am most disappointed, however, is with the senior class. They are still wildly inconsistent, especially on beam. Even Reagan, who is the best beamer we have, has never reached anything even approaching Sarah Finnegan or Ashleigh Gnat type consistency, which is what we would hope. And Sami - her bars, especially dismount seems much improved, but her beam is so streaky. I hope that maybe Haleigh or Olivia Dunne can break into the beam lineup and add consistency.

The one thing I do want to note, though, is how good Christina looked. She looked better on both floor and beam on Friday than she looked all of last year and I am really rooting for her to have a great season! She really seemed strong and confident on beam and her tumbling seemed so much stronger as well. I am glad she has finally gotten over her nagging injuries because she will be a great help to the team.

Bryant should definitely be getting an award this week for an outstanding performance opening weekend. I hope she does her other dismount on bars.

Desiderio has been terrific so far. Best I’ve seen her since being at LSU

Agree that the senior class as a whole has been relatively disappointing, especially if you compare them to the classes of finnegan and gnat. We obviously don't know the day-to-day details of the team, but it seems like they still lack that one person who is the spirit of the team and drives them all/leads by example like Gnat, Hambrick, and Finnegan did in their senior seasons.

I also agree that Desiderio looks GREAT. So confident and her tumbling is already miles better than last season. Amazing too considering she's the youngest senior. I wish she was later in the beam lineup to get the scores she deserves, but having a routine that reliable in the leadoff is a luxury.

I also continue to be impressed by Dean, who just keeps proving what a sturdy girder she is on beam. Although I still feel like she has no business being in that floor lineup when there are plenty of superior routines available. PLEASE but Ballard in the lineup, her tumbling is great and dance is probably best on the team from what we saw in 101. Unless she's literally falling all the time in practice, I don't see why she isn't in the ideal 6, which to me would be Johnson, Bryant, Desiderio, Ballard, Edwards (with a fixed middle pass), and Arenas/Dunne.

And Bryant is gonna be a superstar but we all already knew that. Easily the best freshman in the SEC, probably the country too. But PLEASE have her do the double front 1/2 dismount on bars instead. I have no idea why isn't doing beam, her JO beam looked fantastic tbh.

Let’s turn the page and look forward to this Friday’s meet. What are you all looking forward to seeing the most?

everyone needs to chill. It was the first meet of the season with a covid offseason. This team has TONS OF TALENT and will do better moving forward.

We are chill, we just disagree about some lineup/routine construction choices, as we all did last season.

Well, what I'm most looking forward to Friday: I'd like to see Gunter do floor and also Reagan in that first spot. If Alyona is only on vault and bars, she could try the 1.5 once more, maybe? I think Olivia has to do beam. And wish Arenas would find her confidence and make hr gymnastics a little more sharp, I think that's what's missing for her.

Glad to hear Bryant will be in the AA, she should be. I'd like to see Campbell on floor, Dunne on beam and floor (if her ankle is up for it). I am OK with Arenas vaulting - a clean steady full is fine as a leadoff - and would like to see her on bars as well. I think she's just nervous and will get a lot better with some experience under her belt. Some experimentation with lineup spots is fine but we need the core of the lineup to be steady and consistent. Can we use exhibitions?

I think they can only do exhibition routines if they’re on the SEC+ Network. Florida and Auburn did a few exhibition routines Friday night. Their meet was on the SEC+ Network. I think it’s more of a timing/schedule thing on the regular SEC Network.

Also, someone mentioned in a post earlier that maybe Erenas was hurt or something because she was not in the bars lineup. I don’t think that’s correct because she was the first alternate on both bars and floor. I think maybe Jay just wanted to rest her and not put so much pressure on her in the first meet. But what worries me is that Sami was the first alternate on vault. Thought Ryan (or even Rau) would be the first alternate. If Sami’s vault is the 7th best vault on the team, then LSU has no room for error on that event.
