Situation is 100% out of control ...
Might as well be NFL free agency with no contractual obligations or salary cap.
And for high school kids too.

If someone wants to pay a HS kid $13M to play for a certain college, then my congrats to the kid! That is life changing money

That’s insane for a college kid. Talk about a joke

that's 13 million over 4 years. not really crazy when considering he's a QB and how much money college football programs rake in annually.

Just gotta laugh at Florida at this point. Hell any kid would commit if you offer 13Milly. Florida is just desperate offering that to someone with no college experience. Lol

Is it though if that would be your kid?
I guarantee there would be 13 million reasons you would love it!

Yeah I don’t understand how people can’t grasp this. A heisman- or natty-winning QB is worth FAR more than $13m total to their program in just a single year. Even accounting for the uncertainty involved, $2-3m/year really isn’t that much.

I wonder if this will be a Jamarcus Russell situation where his contract is so insane that it causes a cap to be put in place

This kid is ruining his own recruitment prioritizing NIL. This situation has gotten to be embarrassing

This. He’s a four star, high end one but certainly not a Lawrence, Fields, Murray type coming out of HS. Florida literally landed Lagway and still wanted to pay him 13M? I’m glad LSU has Coach Kelly and staff, of course these kids are getting paid and rightfully so, but you get the vibe that they aren’t going to overpay for an unproven high school talent. Instead, LSU landed a Hurley, whom by all accounts is LSU to the bone and truly level-headed.

No doubt. How much do you think Burrow was worth to LSU in 2019? Hard to even put a number on it. Even if Rashada is just a quality SEC QB then you can justify it. If he's a total bust then oh well. Not my money.

Statistically speaking finding a qb that will win a heisman or Natty is just about equivalent to hitting the lottery. If you think 2-3 m a year is an understandable risk/reward for a 4* qb then idk what to tell you. There is a reason UF isn’t going to pay it.

that number is wildly inaccurate and came from a writer who "shoots from the hip". Nobody is promising $10+ million to anyone outside a generational talent.

ETA: the 5 star RB who signed with Texas this year said in an interview he expects to make about $1m over his entire time at Texas. Thats one of the absolute best players this year and hes only getting $1m from the richest university in NCAA. But yall keep believing everything you hear

It is crazy for an unproven freshman from high school that never played a down in college. This shite is out of control as this kid might be a bust. That kind of money for a sophomore who had a Heisman-like freshmen year, maybe, but not an unproven kid.

I though this stuff was for kids to get some deals once they got to school, like 5-10K per month and upwards of 20-30K per month for better and more popular players, so they could live easy during college... But 13M to sign out of high school = out of control!!!

How many times do people have to explain that it's illegal to implement a cap. The supreme court will strike down a "salary cap" in a millisecond.

It's this simple: The NCAA *cannot* place limitations on student athletes' ability to profit on their name/image/likeness. They are not employees of the NCAA and do not collectively bargain; thus, the NCAA cannot touch outside endorsements. It would be the same as if the NFL or NBA tried to unilaterally ban or limit players from making money on outside endorsements. They can either collectively bargain over the item, or they can't do it. Since college athletes are not employees and thus do not collectively bargain with the NCAA, the NCAA cannot restrict their earning potential with respect to NIL earnings.

There. Will. Never. Be. A. Salary. Cap.

The 2019 team is a prime example of what NIL was intended to be and how it could work. How much money could Joe, Chase, JJ, etc. have made that year if they could have legally profited off their success and fame. Commercials, autograph signings, appearance fees. Yet that year we had the NCAA bitching at us because OBJ handed out some $100 bills

But the main point is those guys had proven themselves and had success, and deserve to reap the benefits. Promising a kid $13m before he ever signs his LOI is just buying him for your school. Outside of his HS area and the subset of CFB fans who follow recruiting hard core, who knows the name Jaden Rashada? What has he done to have a $13m valuation on his name and image?

Players should get all the money they can as a result of what they bring into the university. But not until they have actually earned that money
