This should tell you where we were with Hayes.
Low-level SEC talent at best.
In truth, he should have been a 10 minutes a game guy. Instead he played starter's minutes because the people in front of him were terrible.
It's fair to expect the new people will be a great deal better. If not, then McMahon has to go. It's just that simple.

Depending on what metrics you like, he graded out as one of the two or three best players on last year's team. That does go a ways to showing how bad last year's team was but he would have been a solid player off the bench. Probably wanted starter minutes and will likely get that ECU.

We are not going to get any players that are highly sought anywhere else. We will wind up with the dregs of the portal. State of the program

Jalen Cook (11th ranked player in transfer portal)
quote:
Tulane guard Jalen Cook entered the transfer portal Thursday while keeping his options open for the 2023 NBA Draft. And according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, it didn’t take long for Cook to drum up interest from a number of high-major programs. Rothstein listed a laundry list of schools Cook is receiving interest from, including: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Gonzaga, Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, LSU, Memphis, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, TCU, UCF, Washington, Washington State and Xavier.
Carlos Stewart (23rd ranked player in transfer portal)
quote:
Carlos Stewart had a lot of buzz when he entered the transfer portal The 6-foot-1 guard earned first-team All-WCC status after averaging 15.2 points and shooting 40.3 percent from three last season. Once college programs saw the stats, they turned on the film and started inquiring.
They also signed two other top 100 transfers in Will Baker and Jordan Wright.

NCAA Basketball: 20 early team winners of 2023 transfer portal offseason
8. LSU Tigers
It’s not as prolific as the group Arkansas brought in but the Tigers have some big names coming in next season. The biggest name of the four-man group is Jalen Cook, who actually started his NCAA Basketball career at LSU. He left after his freshman season to go to Tulane, where he became a star. He averaged 19.9 ppg and 4.9 apg, including multiple 30-point games and one where Cook went for 27 points and 14 assists against Memphis.
Joining Cook in the backcourt is Carlos Stewart, a guard from Baton Rouge that had a sophomore breakout season at Santa Clara. He averaged 15.2 ppg and shot 40% from three-point range, including a 29-point game against UC-Irvine. His recruitment lasted less than a week in the portal and opted to return home.
The lone frontcourt player in the group is Will Baker, a former top-100 prospect that at Nevada, averaged 13.6 ppg and 5.2 rpg this past season. The 6’11 center shot 56% from the field and went for a career-high 28 points against New Mexico. Lastly, the team got an SEC player in Jordan Wright, a 6’5 wing from Vanderbilt coming off a 10.6 ppg and 5.1 rpg campaign.
After finishing in last place, head coach Matt McMahon has rebuilt the roster fairly nicely, with guys that are power conference contributors. They may need a power forward to round out the offseason but this group should be good enough to make a big jump in the league next year.

Here are the top winners in the transfer portal (so far):
LSU
LSU coach Matt McMahon doesn’t have to build a whole new team from scratch like the 2022 cycle, but the Tigers have made three big moves. Nevada transfer big man Will Baker is a plug-and-play starting 5. Vanderbilt transfer Jordan Wright shot 40% from 3 in conference play last year. He can be a high-floor, 3-and-D weapon. But Tulane transfer Jalen Cook is the biggest prize of them all. A dazzling, multi-dimensional point guard is exactly what LSU was missing. Cook, Baker and Wright should all be in position to start immediately which makes up for LSU losing some key rotation pieces to the portal.

All the players McMahon has picked up are winning basketball players.
Still needs to add a couple more pieces but he has done well.

Phillips was one I wished came back, you can't teach 7 feet and a big wingspan.

Phillips is replaceable, but on the other hand we haven't replaced him yet.
I'd like to see us get Cisse. Cisse has the rebounding and defense that we lack. He's got no offense other than dunks and layups, but with the other bigs we have that's not a terrible problem.
But we're still short a guard who can score and defend.
And honestly, we're out of quality Louisiana players wanting to come home, so I really don't know what McMahon can get. It seems like all of those kids we were in the game for a week or so ago are going someplace else now, and that isn't good.
I don't think the roster we have right now, without adding a couple of players to replace it, is close to getting us into postseason play. The team he has now would get murdered on the boards and people will shoot right over them on the perimeter. And without major development of somebody like Ward or Mike Williams coming in here and being far better than anybody ever would have thought, I still think you're at least one shooter short on the perimeter.

I know the NCAA barely exists now but how is Cisse going to be eligible?
Posted on 4/25/23 at 4:34 pm to saintsfan22
If he wants to come to LSU, they’ll make him jump through hoops lmao
Posted on 4/25/23 at 6:15 pm to saintsfan22
I would think he has to be close to being a grad transfer at this point. He's four years in, isn't he? I know it's at least three.
Posted on 4/25/23 at 6:43 pm to macaoidh
He's finishing his 3rd year now. He reclassified into the 2020 class out of HS so he probably didn't come in with credits. Maybe he did summer school and intercessions but haven't seen anything saying he's going to be a grad transfer.

quote:Are Cook and Stewart worse than Hill and Miller? At least half of your equation is answered. Plus, if Wright is more w than 3, our guard rotation is set with Hannibal. No way we are going to get a guard who demands more than 10 minutes to sign up. Might be better off giving the freshman some minutes.
But we're still short a guard who can score and defend.

Where is LSU at with Tyreek Smith , has he visited yet,if he could give LSU minutes like Derek Fountain it would definitely be a welcome addition.
Posted on 4/26/23 at 8:24 am to LSUFanMizeWay
I do not believe he has taken an official visit anywhere
