Expected, but also crazy that we lost 2 top 200 draft prospects in the month of July. Like project said, if they require everyone to go to college, it’s not going to be shooting fish in a barrel to land top talent like everyone thought. Baseball recruiting will change a ton with how competitive you will have to be to win recruitments.

I don't personally get the impression that it will be harder. We lost two guys for the same reason: competition that they didn't want. We don't lose those guys if we didn't land so many others, so if they change the rule to require everyone to go to college, there will be a much larger pool to draw from, and guys like Konnor Griffin, who we've lost out on in the past, would end up here, as there is no way he wouldn't have immediately been a starter here. And if that means that some guys go elsewhere because of a logjam of talent, that's precisely the goal. Be "too talented" of a team. If we had lost these guys because they just lost all interest in the program, because they think LSU stinks, that would be an actual problem.

What the rule would really change is the overall depth of talent across college baseball, but I would expect that the top programs, like LSU, would continue to get the best of the best to commit, but actually get them to campus. As good as LSU has been (this year notwithstanding), if we always got the top 5 or so guys in each class to come to campus over the years, it would have been insane. Our top commits always seem to blow up minor league baseball, and pretty often the majors, as well.

You'd still get the best of the best, but you would get fewer of them. Yes Connor Griffin would have started here. He was also a starter in MLB at 19 years old. It already takes someone pretty special to start at LSU as a freshman, but if the talent pool was deeper, that would be even more difficult since the quality of players is higher. Those top tier guys are going to go where they can start immediately so they can be drafted as soon as possible. It would make recruiting freshman more difficult for the top programs.

The signal for me is that losing two such highly rated guys shows just how loaded the roster in '27 will be.

Just gotta hope Evans and Schmidt can be those dudes...or perhaps Hood steps into that role if either of them falter.

I love me some Hood.

This still does not compute with me, as it's what I just addressed. guys who are good enough to start here, will be here. That's what you want. I don't understand the argument that if the talent pool is deeper then it is harder because the quality is higher. We get the best of the best to commit here, because this is where they want to be if they don't get their number in the draft. That wouldn't change. What would change is that you'd have more guys now coming to college, which means some guys will go elsewhere for playing time. How is this a bad thing? Being too crowded means you've done your job in roster building. There are only so many spots, and yes, the best players want to start, and they will start, unless we're already loaded.

Again, the real change is that, because of this, college baseball, as a whole, will have a much higher quality of talent. So you can certainly argue that the games will be even harder. But you're always in a battle for the best players, and that will not change.

That is precisely what it tells me, as well.

The same SEC teams that fight over players now will just be fighting over more available players. Not sure why you’re dramatizing it.

It will make lower power conf teams more talented and mid majors and even JUCOs probably (especially JUCO if they keep the 1/2 year draft rule place there for them but force 4 year players to stay 2 or even 3 years).

It will also let us land all these super top notch 1st-3rd rounders we can rarely get to campus, so our talent pool goes up as well.

It's a cascading effect, not just the lower tier power conf teams and mid majors will benefit. You will also see the Konnor Griffins get to our campus as well.

I'm still digging in on Jason Wachs last season at Tulane. The more I comb through the play logs on the box scores, the more I like the pick up.

A lot of instances of taking the extra base (first to third on single, scoring from 1st on a double), several times he was intentionally walked. He sees a ton of pitches. He got better as the season went on from a BB%, K%, and XBH standpoint.

He did play some CF as a freshman. Apparently there was some injury stuff that kept him at DH and RF last year. I think he will be fine in CF for us and then move over to a corner late to insert a more defensive CF.

He batted either 2nd or 3rd all year and was the main "don't let him beat you" guy for Tulane and still performed.

He's back to 210lbs. with a goal of 220 by next year. Excited for the guys drafted and mentions that fall ball will be pretty intense.

220 lbs is a good weight to aim for. Will be better for him in recovery and also allow him to go later in games without losing much velocity. If Schmidt and Evans can progress like there talent shows we could have a very dominant team top to bottom.

Project thanks for reminding me of Oral Roberts. When the field was announced for that college, World Series Jay Johnson in his first interview said something like “I haven’t scouted oral Roberts yet, but they probably have some major leaguers on their team too”. At the time I thought it was just complementary speech, but in reality, it’s turned out to be the case.
