As bad as little was he will still likely get drafted
Not as high as he wants but still drafted

Absolutely.

Is the July 1 transfer rule for sec to sec school transfers not a thing for baseball though?

At what point do you stop taking talented guys that may be good or may not figure it out like him when it means you are pushing other guys out of the program. Looking at it from a roster standpoint is another situation. They have bigger portal arms right now to go after than Cortez. If you take him just to take him then that keeps making that roster size larger and larger and eventually you start pushing out other guys who were with the team. Eventually that will have a bad effect on recruiting HS kids if it becomes a continuous issue.

I dont think Jay will care, nor do i think that would affect the program. LSU has a standard and if you aren't good enough to play there, then they aren't just going to play you because you've been in the program. They are going to find players that are good enough.

and I think most times is symbiotic, where the player realizes that and moves on to a place they will be able to play.

If they continue to win at this level, everyone will continue to want to play here.

Not sure how many times Jay has said this recently, but its been a lot. And he will play into that as much as he can.

All good points. I think it will be something to monitor going forward. Like you said, there is a standard at LSU to prepare to play in the MLB and to win championships.

Another point is having plenty arms available with injury issues. We saw what having a little extra depth did this past season with all the arm injuries. If he wants in, you take him. Let him and Moffett be the flame throwing projects of the pitching staff.

Ethan Frey is off to a hot start in the Northwoods League. Two games in he's got a double and a homer, 3 walks. He's played both 1B and RF. I wonder if he will also catch. I think the reps in the other two spots will help him more as it will do a lot more to get him on the field for us in the spring.

ETA: Aiden Moffett threw an inning and struck out 2. I will try to watch the inning Moffett threw. Their streaming service is free, you just have to sign up for an account.

I really feel like long term OF makes most sense for him, just a matter of getting the reps. Jones is definitely more a 1B than OF. Frey seems to be the better athlete between the 2 of them if both are going to play (and at a position).

Agree. Frey has RF potential written all over him. He just needs the reps out there and to learn the position. Will be some bumps and bruises as he probably never played much OF before but if he can figure it out I think he will excel big time.

Dont know how long he would want to stick around as just a DH with his talent level. I'm sure he wants to play a position bad and continue to get his draft stock up by showing that.

No doubt he's a 20+ HR guy wherever in the lineup.

I wonder if both Travinski/Milazzo left if 1 of them would be considered the backup to Neal behind the plate. Edit - I'm not sure who else even we have at catcher next year besides Neal/Frey/Jones in that case

This past season shows you can never have enough catchers

You have to find a spot for Frey and the more positions he can play the better lsu will be

LSU has a good nucleus to build on with jones Frey Kling and Neal

Unless you were Paul Skeenes the SEC umps were a big factor for pretty much every pitcher in the SEC this past year.

Chase Dollander was not the same pitcher. IMO that was due in large part to the tight strike zone. He didn't forget how to pitch.

Likely one of jones or frey would need to be backup catcher if both milazzo and travinski left. Id lean jones.

Also, i meant more dh’ing part time, not full time.

I think they will try and add a catcher if Milazzo leaves. I dont think Frey or Jones will catch at all unless something goes sideways.

Jones is your 1B and Frey has not gotten catcher reps in a while. Strictly focusing on OF it seems.

At this point, we have to be.

I think we may have some back burner options ready to announce if things break certain ways in the draft. Like Les mentioned with catchers, I think there are some JUCO options we may explore if needed. There are some pitchers, both JUCO and Portal that may be on the cusp pending what happens with the draft.

I think the 2 weeks in Omaha have them behind the 8ball a little.

They redshirted a bunch of guys and not many have transferred out, either, though. I think they are prepared to go in either direction

If you read the main board all season you’d understand what I mean about being selective. Not understanding the league baseline and where everyone fell. I’m not criticizing, just more of an observation.

They don’t really care if he figured it out last year. They will think that he can figure it out here.

He throws 98 and you cannot teach that. Easy, no brainer take.

I did read it all season. Yes, ERA's were up, but there is a difference between higher numbers than expected, and being really bad, as some were all year, or for much of the year. If you want to focus on people who don't know anything, that's your business, but I'm talking about whether or not we can be legitimately concerned about a pitcher's performance. And to that end, I think too much emphasis is being placed on the strike zone as an excuse for everything.

Also, I think I was pretty clear that it's right to take a chance on someone with that kind of arm. If you thought I was questioning the wisdom of considering bringing in Cortez, you only skimmed through my post.
