We have more pitching need than position player need. We needed experienced middle infield and we got it.

I think we're going to be a lot more targeted in who we actually take now. Jay puts in a lot of work on the high school classes and takes the development side extremely seriously. I don't think he's going to want a reputation of recruiting over guys with the portal every year.

At a certain level is it's unsustainable.

With Jay at the helm we should never really struggle to score. Definitely need more quality arms so we can overcome any possible injuries in the future. Next season staff and bullpen might be better overall, at least I hope.

That has been the biggest ? in the whole portal thing discussed. How do you handle it and still be able to bring in good recruits that don't have to worry about being shown the door after a year because of transfer players. That question is still not yet fully answered. Jay, like you said, loves developing players. He has also mentioned he will use the portal specific ways and not just to go after a bunch of guys every year.

Pitching and maybe 1 more MIF will likely be the target unless someone like Ammick decides he wants in at LSU.

I'm assuming there will be a decent amount of roster turnover this off season?

Are the extended covid rosters gone next year? What will the limit be?

Just the organic turnover (draft, graduation) will be pretty massive this year.

Of course there will be outbound portal guys as there always are, but I respectfully request that the speculation on who those guys are stay out of this thread.

ETA: Not sure on the COVID year rules right now. But it seems like we've been in contact with a lot of COVID year guys, so I guess they expect to be able to carry some extra ones this upcoming season.

I wonder if this is Florida too as Kendall alluded to.

Holman is from PA so who knows what connections are there.

Did we? We lose Thompson and Dugas. We have Guidry and Nippolt on the roster, Braswell by transfer, and a few unproven freshman coming in.

I'm thinking we'll be after another middle infielder.

I'm not necessarily saying we're done with middle infielders, or position players. Just that the guy we got addresses one of the big needs.

We also have Tanner Reaves coming in that will compete at 2nd base. He'll be a redshirt sophomore with a 1 year of starting experience in a good JUCO league.

I don't know which guys might fit this mold of our follows, but I could see a grad transfer/COVID year MIF coming in for a year. Provide some experience but not block any of the freshmen for the longterm.

ETA: I think we're still on the hunt for a 1B/DH power hitter type as well.

I think middle inf is as pressing of a need as starting pitching

I suspect he throws multiple darts like last year. And Braswell is a more emergency utility piece if they can help it. I suspect he’s still looking to upgrade

I still think there's another middle infielder to be added in the transfer portal.

Merrifield will be gone. Does Nippolt return? I'm hesitant.

Braswell is really good with the glove and I think Jay is probably betting that he can get the bat to where the potential is for him. He was a high prospect coming out of high school and had a pretty good freshman year then dropped a little his sophomore year.

Not as much pop as Thompson, but with some work could probably have a better AVG and OBP. Would be a nice 8/9 hole hitter and play a good SS.

That said, I agree that Jay will likely be looking to land another MIF if he can. Will have a lot of options but no proven options.

Braswell has a ground ball rate over 50% and a line drive rate in the mid 20% range. He doesn't hit a lot of fly balls at all and had zero pop ups this past season.

He's a swing change candidate. He strikes out more than Thompson but walks more as well. He won't turn into a HR hitter overnight, but adding a little more loft will add more extra base hits as his line drive rate indicates that he hits the ball hard.
