Underwood is the only example you need that it is NEVER shut down or over until pen meets paper.

Yes, because it’s practically useless now.

And who can blame him?

I just had my annual review for my company. I have committed to them for 2025. I am treated well and I am highly compensated.

But, if another company comes along and doubles my salary, the nature of the relationship will have changed.

And it will be my companies choice and discretion to see whether they value be and my services as much as company X.

Most people would do the same. Now imagine those people being 17-18 years old, likely middle class or below, with parents and hangers on constantly in their ear about more money. Then add the agent part and the constant overtures from other "companies". Temptation is at times too much to bear.
Men, in particular, have a long lineage of falling victim to far less temptation than money. Women for instance. Or a big new truck in which they can barely cover the payments, insurance and gas. Yet we as everymen want to hold these kids to a standard in which we ourselves wouldn't/couldnt uphold. Not for life changing money. We may hate what the sport has become but it's just catching up to the example every industry in the country has set. Capitalism baby. Don't you love it? Best system in the world until those with more make an example of how it truly works by stepping on or over the little guy with less.

No one blames him lol.

The difference in your example is you probably don’t post on your LinkedIn “I’m shutting it down and staying at Blue Bayou for the 2025 season”

It’s the “look at me mentality” that is off putting

Its not "look at me"...its "the current environment has forced me to re evaluate the nature of the relationship."

I hope he stays. I think he might. It would be great if he does. But I won't blame him if he doesn't.

Lots of understandable cynicism in this thread.
Lots of kids "commit" never intending it to mean much.
I have a feeling this young man and his family are sincere and intend to be bound by their commitment. If so, the comparison to others who never left the marketplace is unfair.
BUT, the current environment is one where someone could come along and offer the player so much money he could not responsibly ignore it.
I do not think Underwood was playing LSU. I think an unanticipated offer came along for so much money, he, too, could not ignore it.
Not everybody is in bad faith.

OP, you are right. What does shutting down his recruitment really matter nowadays?

It doesn’t mean much, so we don’t want to see any meltdowns if he switches
