I actually witnessed someone release tears of joy when they saw fournette say, "da boot baby, lsu", in the thickest Cajun accent imaginable.

To be fair, it was prolly a release of tears of sadness that had backed up and just needed a little crack in the dam to bust lose.

Well, you may have gotten the the year wrong, depending on what exactly you meant. Hector’s last high school football season was 78. He graduated in spring 79. He played as a freshman at aTm in the 79 football season. A side note, he was second in rushing to Junius Durrel , a junior at Acadiana.
The same recruiting Miss, a bigger one IMO, was Billy Cannon Jr. going to aTm. Not because he was ultimately better than Hector but because he was the son of the greatest Tiger ever at that time and a Baton Rouge kid. Another side note, Cannon played both ways at an extremely high level. He was the second leading rusher in the state, second by just a few yards to Junius Durrel who did go to LSU but never really lived up to expectations. Junius and I graduated together.

The 87 team was Stovall’s senior class, the man was a great recruiter and was working his arse off, he was not a great coach but he was getting there, I believe if he had been given more time we would have had long term success.

As a fellow Iberian, I remember Johnny Hector well. When he would get a handoff, the whole crowd would rise to its feet, knowing he could go all the way on any play.

What kind of haircut did Hector have?

I still don't blame Johnny. He would have stayed committed if they hadn't tried to pressure him because he took an official visit to aTm. Johnny was a smart kid and great athlete and he did fine for himself. He went on to play for the Jets for 12 years and is now comfortably retired.

Graduated with Hector, dude had a spin move like no other. Great running back.
Yea A&M was a head scratcher at the time.

Ha no, I was only 5 during that one. But I'd say that as long as there has been Bowl games with money and bragging rights on the line, there have been some major battles. I'd bet there were big time LSU/Tulane battles too.

Crow was pretty far away from Baton Rouge though.
True. Springhill (Crow's hometown) to BR is a 5 hour drive now. I don't know how long it was back then, but it had to be much longer.

Believe me, despite the distance, there were plenty of LSU fans then, as well as now. In this part of the state, LSU has always been respected as the flag ship university.

Is the story true that John David Crow or Crow Jr. damn near beat the life of some NLU athlete that was physically assaulting his daughter while she was attending NLU (now ULM)?
I was at NLU the last few years of Crow's time as head coach. He was there 1976 until 1980. Interesting story, but I've never heard it before. JDC Jr. played at Alabama from 1975 to 1977. I guess Jr. could've been on dad's staff at NLU, but I don't remember that.

More on this story than that. It was really way more zany than that. The UT coaches went to see him on a home visit and he told them he was going to LSU. They said let’s go get something to eat and convinced him to take one more look at Austin. They took him to UT and put him in a room with guards in the haul.
The LSU coaches followed him down to Austin and couldn’t find Tittle. He story is that they ask someone coming out of the building if he knew anything about it. He walked down a little way and pointed at a window and said he was in that room.
One of the coaches climbed a nearby tree and convinced Tittle to climb down the tree. He got down and was on the way to Baton Rouge before the UT coaches found out.
