For those saying, “LSU and Brian Kelly can’t recruit…”

I’ve observed a somewhat consistent narrative from some ranters and I wanted to tackle the narrative because I know the opposite to be true. The narrative is, “Brian Kelly and LSU can’t recruit…” I think the easiest counter is the answer to this question, “Which prospects are the hardest to recruit?…” I’m pretty sure the answer is, “Prospects that are already committed to another school.” So, let’s take a look at kids LSU flipped from other schools in the 2024 class to see if those ranters’ assertions hold a bit of merit…
(Ahmad Breaux) 87 OVR, flipped from Duke.
(Joseph Cryer) 88 OVR, flipped from Ole Miss.
(Bernard Causey) 88 OVR, flipped from Ole Miss.
(PJ Woodland) 88 OVR, flipped from Mississippi State.
(Gabriel Reliford) 91 OVR, flipped from Texas A&M.
(Xavier Atkins) 90 OVR, decommits from LSU and commits to Texas A&M, then LSU flipped him from Texas A&M.
(CJ Jackson) 91 OVR, flipped from Georgia Tech.
(Weston Davis) 93 OVR, flipped from Texas A&M.
(Ju’Juan Johnson) 90 OVR, flipped from Colorado.
9 flips, so a third of your class you flipped from a total of 6 different schools. Most of this staff can recruit just fine.

You’re still very much in it for Terry Bussey and Dominick McKinley per our own experts. And we’ll see what happens with Coen Echols in the coming week. My point is, you’re looking at a possible top 5 class once again even without Tuggle, you’re trending in the transfer portal, and you’re some certified recruit flipping machines. You can recruit last year and you can recruit this year too, the results prove that. What I think you detractors are really saying though is, “I’m a causal that can’t discern nuance, and all my ape brain understands is star-ratings and class-rankings.” The world is more complicated than that, so is the world of recruiting.

I do not think they are bad recruiters by any means, but it's extremely obvious that you need to be landing around the top 5 to be competing consistently.

Your perspective is the best place to be in all of this. Very even-handed of you, and you still understand you need to be top 10 (at least) every single year. Portal supplements need to be hits more times than not.

Brian Kelly can recruit but 1 side of the ball is recruiting drastically better than the other. If Kelly fixes the defensive staff, I’d expect to see elite level recruiting throughout the team.

I agree, that was my biggest reason for wanting to fire all our defensive coaches, and there’s a lot of great reasons. This also is partially why you’re seeing this class struggle along ranking-wise, whilst still being very competitive on paper with the recruits the other staff has mostly acquired. If the defensive staff was half as decent at recruiting you’d be a top 7 class. If you look at who’s doing all the successful recruiting even for our defensive recruits, it’s our other staff. What’s on the field is horrific, but what are those staff members bringing in?… Clearly, not enough to justify any semblance of salvation. Therefore, all of the defensive staff has gotta go.

Look at it like this… There’s been a total of 7 LSU decommits, 5 of the 7 on defense. 1 a TE that was never meant to be, and 1 a WR you pushed out. This right here ALONE tells us everything we need to know recruiting-wise.

BK is not an elite recruiter.

BK was given a contract normally given to elite coaches.
Lsu was preseason #5 in 2023.
LSU underachieved in 2023.

Did he actually officially decommit from us and commit to A&M at one point? I know for a while it seemed like that was going to be a lock, but I didn't think he actually did.

The argument has never been that he can't recruit.

That is YOUR UNINFORMED OPINION. Oh, but you are right on Kelly not being an elite coach. After all, dozens and dozens of coaches have won as many games as Kelly has.

When you start flipping recruits from bama ohio st and Georgia, then you got something. Flips from 4rd tier schools don't count
