Why are all refrigerator ice makers so terrible?

Or maybe I just suck at picking out refrigerators. My last 3 fridges have had issues after around a year or so.

My wife purchased a fridge that had no water or ice in the door. Just the "old school" tray in the freezer. I hated it at first but it's pretty reliable. No issues in 4+ years so far.

All refrigerators are trash. Get the least amount of technology as possible and hope for the best.

I have a 20 year old LG. Standard icemaker in the top freezer. Still going strong. In-the-door, fancy crap always breaks.

Stand alone icemakers break all the time as well. That blows me away.

My whirlpool ice maker went out last week. The sensor that tells it to dump had come off the try and froze inside the ice reservoir. I thought that caused the ice maker itself to short out so I replaced it. Still no luck. I’m not getting any water to the maker.

So now I’m thinking solenoid valve is bad. It came in a few days ago and is sitting on top of the fridge waiting on me to fool with it. I hate working on this shite.

Get a no frills fridge and a table top ice maker. Save money and less headaches

My fridge is a 2004 Whirlpool, ice maker is a champ. Churns out great ice and never jams.

I went through a similar issue.

The water dispenser had low pressure. "Fine," I thought. I'll change out the water filter. Didn't make a difference.

Took the water filter out, and water pressure was good.

Put it back in and it was low again.

"Hmmm..."

I noticed the ice maker wasn't working very well either. Would freeze over, or not produce ice at all.

First, I changed the inlet valve. (Wasn't it.)
Then, I changed out the ice maker with a new wire harness. (Started working.)
Water dispenser still had bad pressure.

So apparently it was 2 different issues.

Started looking on youtube and someone pointed out that the water filter holder dealy has these little valves that need to be fully depressed to allow enough flow.

Bought a new water filter housing. (Very easy and quick replacement.)

Started working great again.

TL;DR: Though it can be a pain, it is fixable. Just have to figure out the real problem.

I took my filter out a while ago. It would work fine for a couple of days and then stop up. I got tired of spending 50 bucks a week and just took it out

That's a whole different issue. Hard water is a problem for a lot of people. Might be worth considering a water softener for the house.

Mine was a filter problem as well, same name brand recommended by manufacturer wouldn't work, dropped water pressure = no ice, cheaper filter, back in business, of course I discovered this after I defrosted the fridge and tore it all apart

Consumer Reports has said that the ice maker is the number one repair need for refrigerators. Ours went out many years ago, and we didn't even try to fix it. Learned from previous experience that it's a constant battle with a shitty product.

I keep a couple of old school trays, one silicon with big blocks for cocktails, and I buy a bag if company is coming.
