What’s a good herbicide to kill trees at the stump? Specifically crape Myrtle?

I have cut down a couple very large multi trunk crapes (each trunk 4-5” in diameter) and I know they will re -sprout angrily and aggressively. I’d like to not have to dig up those monsters.

Triclopyr (remedy) would be the cheapest and easiest to find.

Drill a few holes and keep them filled with roundup. Root system will eventually die. Found out about this trick on this site.

I read somewhere that when you cut crepe myrtles down you have to apply the chemical to kill the roots within half an hour for the stump to soak it in. If not it begins repairing or healing itself or something like that. In that case you'd have to make a new cut if you waited to long. Just something I read.

A 40 year old crape myrtle in my front yard blew over during a hurricane about 5 or 6 years ago. It just laid over, roots and all. I removed it and stump-ground about 2 feet around the hole. To this day I still get suckers coming up 25 feet away in the yard. I don't think it can be killed.

drill some holes in each stump and dump a bag of rock salt on each one

As others have said, definitely drill and apply immediately after cutting down. You will most likely still get shootups but it becomes less and less every year. I also applied some stump killer to the shootups for a couple years right after I would mow over them and 3 years later I have significantly less.

i cut one down years ago and it never came back. as stated already, the key is applying chemical as soon as the trunk is cut while the cells are open. I just put on a glove and brushed round up on the freshly cut stump without drilling and it never came back. after about 2 years later i did remove the entire stump from my landscape using jeep winch.

I have a couple of pine tree stumps....tree was just cut down and want to try rock salt...however, the stumps are in a mature bed surrounded by large azaleas...will the rock salt seep into the ground and hurt the azaleas?

On multiple occasions I've rented a stump grinder from Home Depot and ground them all up with good results. There have been no new sprouts where I have done this with multiple trees

call a buddy on the OT side of the board and have them yank it out with their F250

the salt will definitely hurt the azaleas. Best to grind the stumps or try and pull them. Normally I leave stumps in beds to rot but not crepe myrtle obviously

Depending on the size, an F150 might do the trick.

Years ago someone in this board explained that after a fresh cut, the crape myrtle cells at the cut site will start closing/healing almost immediately. There were talks of using molasses painted on the stump immediately after the cut. I used a mix of molasses and glyphosate at the cut site, and it was DEAD. Not one shoot ever came up.
