re: What refrigerator brand to buy?

Bought a new build house with a kenmore. Compressor went out less than two years in.
Repairman said kenmore and some LG have a linear compressor issue they are fixing non stop. Some shops wouldn’t even come look at it because they don’t touch them knowing it’s a recurring issue.
Part not labor was supposed to be warranty still but Sears home repair had like a 60 day turnaround time. Long time to live out of a cooler to preserve a warranty in a known issue that might crop up every other year.
I promised them I’d share the stories far and wide.

This type of stuff is exactly why I started this thread. Good info. Thanks to all who shared!

I had a similar experience when I called Sears (via India) for a refrigerator repair. Hung up and called a local shop, which sent someone same day. That was one of the many early signs that Sears was doomed. They were failing miserably at what had been their core competencies.

Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Maytag, and Jennair are all the same company. I understand them generally be more reliable.
I have a basic LG fridge that has been fine for me, but I've many friends who've had issues with some of their higher end, more complex units.
I've also had several friends with many issues on the Samsung models.
Most issues appear to revolve around the exterior ice/water dispensers.

When we renovated our kitchen 11 years ago we got all Kenmore elite appliances. I had to replace the control board on the dishwasher about a year or two ago but other than that all has been good. Actually just googled the light flashing pattern I was getting and replaced the board myself.

Yea- lots of stories if you google kenmore linear compressor and they put the same part in a few LG lines but not all. You’d have to research on that.
Sears repair was a total disaster though.
I also enjoy they would schedule a fully out of pocket repair through their service next day but warranty was the epic wait

I swear I spoke to 20 people in the call center just disastrously. I won’t even attempt to summarize the many and varied issues.

We just bought a Whirlpool under same scenario. Garage fridge went out, but wife wanted French door style on main fridge. We got one with French doors, and a separate drawer for cold storage which is nice.
I would suggest looking at Costco if you have a membership. The setup we bought was $350 cheaper at Costco than Home Depot’s sales price.

I own a Samsung for 10 years with only issue being the ice flap. I replaced it and not issues otherwise

I refuse to spend $3500 +/- on a freaking refrigerator. They don't last longer than 8-10 years anymore. My kids are gone and I don't need a fridge to tell me that we're out of milk. The prices are insane. So....we just bought a GE stove and fridge for $4000. The fridge was $1950. Hopefully it lasts.

We just bought this exact same one in the spring for the same reason you stated, Whirlpool is a reliable brand.
I know people who have LG fridges and they regret every penny they spent on it. They’re always needing repairs.

SubZero hands down ! Expensive but will last ! Had a Samsung and had nothing but trouble with it after 5 years !

Sears/Kenmore makes nothing, they will tell you what company makes their appliance, if asked.
Never buy an appliance from a company that makes TV’s.
My FIL owned an appliance repair business for years. He always bought Whirlpool, they were a little more dependable than most, parts were easy to find.

Damnit. Guess I should have consulted here before I bought a new Samsung a few months ago It’s got 2 ice makers which is cool though. Hope It doesn’t crap out on me
Samsung has class action lawsuit on one of their models due to the ice maker in the Frig. freezing up. There is no fix for it. Problem is they can’t handle the humidity and poor design causes freezing. The ice maker in freezer works fine, though.
Mine was good for about 5 years, but now it freezes the ice cubes and will not dispense. I am now also having water accumulating in bottom drawer, separate problem due to collapsing water line in the insulation. Once again, repair guy says can’t be fixed. Damn Samsung.
