The way my garden has looked the past 3 heavy rainfalls, it seems I need to add soil to it. It is so saturated that even a moderate rain is causing water to hold for several hours between the rows.

I've planted my okra seeds twice by directly sowing them in the garden and both times it rained so hard within days of planting that they were washed out.

Yesterday I put my new seeds in the 4 pack plastic cells to guarantee they will germinate safely and for the first time in my life I will transplant okra into my garden. I've always direct sown them and if transplanting some to sparse areas in another row, I find it takes okra a good bit of time to recover from transplant shock.

What timer/hose y’all recommend? I’m gonna need something for vacations this summer. And I think I’m under watering with just my regular hose in evening.

Orbit B-hyve Smart Faucet Timer

I have two of these, and they work great either programmed or with the smart watering, but I did have to tweak the smart settings a lot to get it to water enough.

Are you soaking the okra seed first?

It has to break thru it's outer husk/seed to germinate. So was always told to do an overnight soaking; however last two times I used an one hour soak of bleach and you could some of the seeds opening up already. Old lady at a local feed and seed explained it to me and it solved my usual long waits.

Personally I over sow like every 2-3 inches and plant in a semi-plot like fashion by planting left-n-right sides of the same row. Then thin out and if needed transplant to fill a spot with a post hole digger. By simply removing a place then plugging the transplant right in without much fuss and had really good results. Seems to not disturb the root ball at all.

No, as I've never done this and to be honest, the rains have come within a day or so of me replanting and washing them away as it's rained hard enough to flatten the tops of my rows.

It's not that they won't germinate, it's that they are being washed away.

We got more rain today and my garden is so saturated that I now have standing water between the rows once again.

If this keeps up, I may lose what is already growing well due to root rot.

Anybody else do baby salad mixes?

This is a 5’x3’ box right outside my kitchen. I like having some green in every meal so being able to toss together a quick little salad is a great option for your gardens.

Mine is starting to bolt, so I’m eating it as fast as I can, but some varieties are getting bitter.

Yeah I love having lettuces around all winter. But bolting is a problem. It hits 80 too often here.

Hey Juice. Same thing happened to my baby bok choy. Was beautiful and almost ready for harvest, then it all bolted overnight. I just pulled it all up and will replant come fall.

My onions have taken a beating. Trim the shoots that got blown over and laying in between the rows? I'm worried about a fungus taking over since they've been sitting in water for better part of 4 days now.

We've gotten about 8 inches total this week so far and my beds actually seem to be draining well. I have a low spot about 20 feet from them in my yard that has always bothered me, however with all this rain I think it's helping give the water somewhere to go.

I poked some vertical holes in the beds and horizontal holes under the wood sides. Hopefully that helps with drainage.

In general are you supposed to trim the ones that fall over? Since they won't ever stand upright again.

I've never grown onions before, mine have 2-3 shoots at about 6-8" high, 3-4 weeks old.

Buddy of mine has a vacant property. I talked him into letting me grow a big garden (I have a John Deere 41 hp tractor with tiller, hipper, cultipacker, seeder). I planted potatoes, five 165’ rows of sweet corn, two 165’ rows of field peas, watermelon, squash, zucchini, Green beans. Gonna be a fun summer.

It’s just a solar powered electric fence. I’m going to put more string up later, didn’t have the time yet, going to need it to keep raccoons out of the sweet corn when it’s ready and coyotes out of the watermelon. It will help with deer as well, they can still jump it if they want to, but didn’t have any issues last year.
