Big Beef vs. Better Boy
Better Boy was my go-to for a long time. There was a discussion several pages back and Big Beef seemed to get high praise from several people. I'm sure I've grown them at some point in the past but don't really remember. So I can't make a definitive call.

Also, anyone here grow San Marzano's
I know one poster (Lsulefty, I think) grows them and really likes them. Hopefully he'll chime in.

How do you usually prune your tomato plants pillage? All my plants are over a foot tall and I want to trim off all the lower branches and only leave the top ones remaining but don't know if that is over kill or not.
I only started pruning late last season.

Growing them both. Also trying out a Banskia Queen from the dwarf tomato project.

Before transplanting? Or just in general?
Before transplanting I just pinch off however much of the lower branches I need to bury them deep. After that I prune as needed. First to get all of the ones touching the ground, then any that may be diseased or damaged. A good rule of thumb I read one time was to never remove more than 1/3 of the foliage at one time.

No more digging in my garden for you, Mr a-hole.

I usually grow 2 San Marzano plants. They are indeterminate and grow like crazy.

I feel like you are going to be spinning your wheels trying to sit there and catch squirrels. They are never ending little frickers. Breeding machines

I used to grow Better Boy also. Big Beef have better disease resistance and don't seem to crack as much. I prefer Big Beef.

Big Beef vs. Better Boy
I like Big Beef much better than Better Boy. When I started growing tomatoes I grew Better Boys. They did fine but I found them to be very meh and they cracked a lot. I also grow Celebrities every year but this year I'm not planting any. Big Beef replaced Celebrity and Better Boy in my garden. I grow a lot of weird tomatoes just because I think they look cool, but I have gotten to where I always plant at least two Big Beef plants. Other than small tomatoes they've been my only hybrids the last couple seasons. For me, they've been super reliable, consistent, and they taste good. They don't crack as much as Celebrities and Better Boys in my experience either, which is a huge plus.
Celebrity plants will make more tomatoes but they just don't have a great taste to me. The last two seasons, I've used them for salsa.
Just my thoughts, but I'd go with Big Beef.

Agree 100%.

On another note, have any of y'all planted out yet? I think I'm going to at least plant my tomatoes out this Sunday afternoon. I finally got all my plants hardened off with the sun we've had and they have really outgrown their pots. Peppers could probably use another week or so but I may go ahead and plant them out too.

I’ve got 8 ready to be transplanted, should be fun.
My dad’s go-to has always been better boy which is a habit he passed on to me, but I think the local nursery mixed up the labels and I grabbed big beef in a rush, which is why I asked y’all thoughts.
At this point I have 8 SM, 4 creole, and 4 better boy or big beef, we shall see what those end up being.

I know. I have to do something, though. Them little bastards turned my yard into Swiss cheese and already dug up a few of my sunflowers. In the first week I caught 7 with the trap. Then I had about a week of no activity. Yesterday I noticed more digging in the garden so I set the trap out again. It’ll be an ongoing battle for sure. Between the trap and the sprinkler I’m just hoping to slow them down as much as possible.

Planted my Roma’s last weekend. Will probably plant the Beefmasters this weekend. The peppers and eggplant can probably wait another week or two, but it won’t be long.

Certain varieties grow best with certain other ones. I'd recommend hitting up your local Ag school. I know Clemson here in SC has a very detailed guide on what types of blueberry bushes to grow together for the best yield. Mine are only three years old now, and last year we had a bumper crop off only two small bushes.

Yeah I could pick 30 San Marzanos at a time from 2 plants. They are smaller than Romas and we would make sauce with them. It takes a lot of tomatoes to make a sauce.
They easily got 5 feet tall and 3 ft wide. My garden looks like a shanty town with poles and string string to keep them off other plants.

Pic
Wanted to check in to see what you think is going on with my cherry tomatoes and what I need to do. Starting to see a brown/rust color forming on some of the leaves.

That looks like sunscald. Overexposure to sunlight. Were these some you started from seeds?

For me. Also like the Better bush. Just easier to manage all around.
As far as San Marzano's, I haven't dabbled. It is on the list. Every year I pick 1 or 2 varieties to give a try.

Yep, started from seed and transplanted to a flower pot.
