It was so cloudy here I didn't ease them in, just straight out there. It didn't phase them at all.

I need to find some more peat pots for the peppers and tomatoes.

Are those solo cups that you're using pillage?

Looks like 4” pots, but I’d be lying if I said I have not used solo or styrofoam cups before.

My tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers are doing well. The eggplants had a few wilt.

I also did 3 flats of flowers with my kids - delphiniums, zinnias, cone flowers, and daisys. I should be able to tell them apart but there’s no telling what’s where or how many.

They’re some 4” plastic pots. Got like a hundred of them for $15 on Amazon. I’d have to go back and look, but I think they are vivosun brand.

It’s so wet here I can’t get everything ready. I brought seed potatoes in from the garage last week during the freeze. I need to do one more till and add all my amendments and 20 sacks of manure. At least the ground will be soft for the deer fence going up hopefully next weekend.

Thanks pillage, I’ll check out Stine’s or Lowe’s sometime this week for some.

Had 3 asparagus shoots show up today. I'll be checking them everyday now, there's 5 more in there somewhere. I can harvest 50% of them this year.

I don’t garden at all. But I’ve been on an okra kick.

Grabbed one of those cheap seed starter plastic greenhouse deals. It has 16 pods to start seeds. Did 8 with okra, 8 with jalapeños just for kicks. Figure I’ve got a few weeks to a month to figure out my planting strategy.

Just a few plants. Figure I can make a raised bed or use a few of those half barrel things. Figure I’ll call it a win if I can just get a plant or two to produce.

Learn me on growing asparagus. My wife has been wanting me to grow some, but I just haven’t gotten around to it. Can these be grown in a container? If I remember correctly, there’s a bit of patience required when growing these? I’ll have to do some more reading on it, but I’d appreciate any first hand tips you can give.

My poor seedlings took a beating from the wind yesterday. About half of my beefmasters were laid over. Luckily no breaks. I used some wooden shish kabob skewers and bread ties to stake them in their 4 inch pots.

Once this cooler weather passes I may have to put them in the ground. Similar to my Roma’s, they have really started to take off and are quickly outgrowing the pot.

If I remember correctly, it takes like 3 years to start producing if you start from seed

I don't have the kind of patience

What is the best solution for ants in tomato buckets. I planted tomatoes in buckets last year and i could not keep the ants out.

Hmm. That would explain why it isn’t the cheapest veggie. Looks like we’ll just keep buying it from the grocery store occasionally. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

I’m having a problem with them in my raised beds right now. Usually I would just soak them with pyganic. Unfortunately I’m out at the moment. I’m thinking of trying spinosad granules. This was recommended by the LSU AgCenter as an ant treatment that would be safe around beehives.

I’ve started Pink Brandywine, Bella Rosa, Better Boy, Big Beef, Sun Gold, Louisiana All Season, Creole, Kellogg’s Breakfast, Rosella Purple, Brandy Fred and Beefsteak tomatoes. I just stepped them up to solo cups and they’ve taken off. I’ve got about 125 plants ???????. Got a few peppers and eggplants too. I’m in northwest La so I’m gonna wait a few weeks.

I went with the solo cup too.

I waited a little too long, all of my tomato plants were still in just the peat pellets but were over a foot tall, some closing in on 2 ft. Roots were everywhere

My wife got some Asparagus seedlings from Sam’s and they seem to grow easy. I believe it takes a few years for them to start producing. From what we read the roots get to be huge. The package my wife bought from Sam’s had 33 plants. We planted some in big growing bags . Also planted 3 in the yard by some shrubs and they are all growing too. I wish we had more room for the rest of them .

My conundrum is what to plant them with. I have 9 root balls waiting to go in the trenches. Debating planting them with the strawberries for perennial purposes or tomatoes for companion benefits. Only issue with the latter is I'll till in peat moss and manure every year, so won't be able to do that with asparagus roots down there.

Damn that's a lot! Stereotypical Sam's

For those of you that use mulch like Scott’s around veggies to keep the weeds out, have you noticed any adverse reactions to the plants?

Been using no float cypress mulch in my garden for years. Never noticed any adverse reactions to the plants or soil. It has been nothing but beneficial.

I am, however, making the switch over to pine straw. The one problem I have with the wood mulch is trying to remove it when necessary. It’s hard to get it out without taking a good bit of soil off of the surface. And you don’t want to till too much of it under if it isn’t broke down enough because it’ll tie up your nitrogen. Also, my soil pH was a little on the high side and pine straw will slowly add acid to the soil over time. Which is something I need.
