Preparing to move in 8 years?

My family and I have decided that we're most likely going to move in around 8 years when my youngest [hopefully] graduates from college. If you knew you were moving in this timeframe, is there anything you'd do to prepare?
I'm thinking that I probably need to be selling larger items that aren't frequently used, but have no idea other than that. I don't want to do anything too dramatic, since it's very possible plans will change. This will be an out of state move, but no more than a five hour drive.

you know how much in your world will change in 8 years?

Totally aware that everything could change, which is why I don't want to do anything drastic unless I get closer to the time.
Right now I'm just thinking focus on getting things out of the house that we don't use, avoid buying any large items that will be tough to move (unless it's really needed), etc...

Are you already setting your plans for the next time Halley's Comet comes around?

I guess I was expecting solid advice here, but no worries. Things like "make sure your roof is replaced if older than 10 years", other repairs to prioritize before selling down the road, etc.

Unless it will devalue greatly by then, I'd probably wait to sell until the proceeds are handy for the move and new start. Sell it now and you won't have the stuff, or the money by then.

Here's my advice: Carpe the Diem....
8 years is a long time and a decent chunk of what little time you have left on earth. Who knows what the next 8 years will bring... Look at the insanity of the last 8 years: covid, interest rates and inflation, frickin Kobe died in a helicopter crash! Enjoy your life instead of trying to plan what may or may not happen in 8 years. Live in your house like you normally would, make repairs like you normally would. Who cares about your roof? The next buyers will deal with that if they need to. Just maintain it and keep the ship pointed in the right direction.

Selling and discarding stuff should be the easy part.
Keep up with required repairs and curb-appeal items like landscaping and peeling paint.
Don't make any renovations or upgrades unless absolutely necessary.

My wife and I are in the same boat. If our daughter moves away for college in La. We’re just going to go with her. When she graduates college, I can retire from the state with 30 years. We’re encouraging her now to leave Louisiana. We don’t want to be the reason she stays.
Keep up maintenance
Use the house for current needs. We got rid of guest beds and use those rooms now for our hobbies.
We sold and gave away to younger cousins a bunch of junk we don’t use
We’re much happier that we decluttered the house and are enjoying today. When we move, it’ll be easier. The only thing in the attic are seasonal decorations.

This winter, start going through things in your attic, shed, garage, spare closets... and start "tagging them" somehow. If you do not use/touch them for 2-3 years, start decluttering them and get rid of them.
I would not worry about replacing your roof, major appliances, or any other renovations until you get closer and are sure the move will happen. Start working on that front yard landscaping so things will be more mature in 6-8 years and will look much nicer.

It's great to be prepared, but 8 years is a little far out. You may have a totally different mindset by then.

Maybe consider renovating the oldest parts of the house. Do this now so that you get to enjoy it for awhile.

8 years?
Law of averages says you will probably be divorced before then.
So don't worry about it.

Either way, I'm getting out of Louisiana.

If you’re that miserable in Louisiana you probably have bigger issues than just needing a change of scenery.

Not miserable at all. Just want to be closer to family.

You better start getting boxes.

I have yet to stay in a house longer than 6 years since I became an adult. Now my 6th house is paid off from the equity of the previous sales. Can’t imaging planning 8 years out.

Don’t put in a pool and don’t plant any oak saplings.
