My old garbage disposal finally died. It was 1/2 HP that seemed to work well. I am looking for opinions on what brand and power to replace it with. 1/2 vs. 3/4 HP and Moan vs. Insinkerator. Thanks.

I’m looking at the 3/4 as well and am close to settling on an insinkerator as well. From everything I’ve seen it’s a very manageable DIY project for a mildly handy person like myself.

Anything I should be mindful of when replacing it? I’m not exactly Mr. Fix it but I can follow directions and have done basic repairs around the house.

Remember to punch out the dishwasher drainage hole before installing. Made that mistake once

Yep, installed an Insinkerator 3/4 hp Space saver, which is insulated and very quiet. Transferred the old cord to it, which is not a problem because it doesn't wear from vibration nor is it subject to overheating.

Actually, you should make sure your dishwasher drains to the disposal before punching out the hole. Made that mistake on my brother's but the duct tape has held up.

3/4 insinkerator quiet series

I put this one in earlier this year. It's a beast and much quieter than my old one.

Mine went out a few weeks back as well. Went with Insinkerator. It was the best option for me in terms of price, availability, and durability reviews.

I literally just did this 2 weeks ago. Had a 1/2 hp insinkerator. Replaced with the Moen 3/4. Easy install and the Moen seems more quite.

Personally I would go with a 1HP Waste King. I don't expect a disposal to be that quiet so it being a bit louder than an Evolution doesn't bother me. Insinkerator uses a slower RPM induction motor, which is part of why they are quieter but they also don't grind as well (unless you get the top of the line models with multiple grind stages) and don't have the starting torque of PM motor disposals. I find even the best Insinkerators will clog on carrot peels, takes them a bit to eventually push the grinds and clear the grind chamber. The Waste King will push clear much faster, has about 1000 more RPM and more starting torque.

IIRC all the quiet ones have multi stage grinding. i have the 3/4hp evolution and concur with the recommendation. we have very open house. the quiet disposal makes a huge difference. install is easy. you'll need some plumber's putty.

Don’t forget to put a fresh bead of plumber’s putty down if you have to install a new drain collar in the sink.

Most have two-stage, except the Excel model which is a three-stage and it needs all three to handle what a L-8000 will do. I installed a 1hp Excel for my parents after the old 3/4 Badger finally broke and my dad tried putting artichoke petals through the 3/4 hp Evolution that replaced it for a few months.
