Thats a real thing right now. They'll sing a different tune come December.
The guy i finally settled on to do my mini split i just installed in the garage told me that i should wait for the big project of replacing the main unit and he could do it cheaper off season. I appreciated him being up front about it.

That's just ridiculous and a company that would not get my money.

Ya I got my 3 ton systems for under $5k each like five years ago.
If they fail, I’m filling this place with minis. Central air is super outdated and wasteful now anyway. Feels antique even. I might keep one central system for the great room but that’s it.

I might just do mini splits if mine dies...
Cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, if one breaks you have several others till going. People have been doing some slick set ups with the inside units to conceal them.
I am putting one in the garage, I might put one in the master since we have a full wall of windows facing the water with ZERO shade, and I don't want to block the view, that is the entire point of the full wall of windows. It can get warm in the evenings with the sun blasting from the west. I could slowly build it out in preparation for the inevitable.

That sounds like something men say while drinking beer in the garage. Most wives ain't putting hotel air conditioner set ups in each room.

Anyone have the ceiling cassettes for the mini split? Might solve the problems with the wife.

I did mini splits in my new build. HVAC quotes were $30k+. Even if I have to replace them every 5 years I would still come out ahead.
I did separate units for each room so if 1 goes out, I'll still have AC in the rest of the house until I can replace that unit.

what brands?
Mitsubishi and panasonic are head and shoulder above the rest but by the time you outfit every room with them, you are near a central system.

I went with Pioneer and installed myself. Much cheaper than Mitsubishi/Fujitsu, etc.

Company I used changed my whole system and redid all my ducts in July last year.
While I agree this is ridiculous, HVAC companies also do have a lot less work in the fall generally speaking. Most companies are probably going to do a better job in the fall when its not hot, lets be honest the heat doesn't make anyone do a better job. Furthermore they won't be in as big of a hurry to make it to the next job.
So I mean honestly OP, while I would not use that company either if you don't have to do this I also don't see why you wouldn't just wait. I'd wait until late September to even get a quote when they are less in demand and more likely to offer a deal.

I don't know why some posters took such an issue with them wanting to wait until cooler weather.
They can yank off a air handler and stick a new one on in an hour and get someone back up and running. Renew of all ductwork takes all day. Seems actually like a decent plan by that hvac company. I don't care how meticulous you are, get up in an attic in August and you'll start hacking stuff after a couple hours. Ends up being a better job for the customer too.
Just don't pre-pay them for the duct job several months away.

Everything now is junk. I just replaced my water heater that lasted 46 years. I'll get 10 out of the new one if I'm lucky.

I’m in the business and think it’s ridiculous. It’s not the ac companies it the manufacturers and the gov that are driving up the prices.

They’re $600. Your wife blows that at Starbucks in 90 days. Who cares?

I guess you haven’t priced a 65 or 80 gallon lately?

For a 10 gallon under the sink water heater, maybe.

We have 2 estimates to replace two 4-ton units. Our older unit (>20yrs.) is a Carrier in need of a new evaporator coil. (We’ve been quoted $6500 to replace the coil.) The other unit is a Trane (2008) and is working ok.
One option is to replace the whole system - both units and the furnace - with a new 7.5 ton Carrier: $24000
The second is to replace both units with a 7.5 Goodman for $16000 (keep the furnace).
A third we’re thinking of is to replace just the Carrier older unit.
I’d appreciate any thoughts on this, including Goodman vs Carrier. Our HVAC guy who quoted Goodman says the components for about all brands are the same, just marketed and packaged differently/thus more expensive ). Thank you!

Just about everyone will tell you the reliability of the unit is more linked to having it properly installed by a professional who gives a damn.
Any brand of unit can fail, or at least not work as efficiently as it should with a crappy installation.
When I put central A/C and heat in my house in 92 I had a good friend in the business who installed the unit and I made up and ran my own ductwork. That unit was trouble free for 27 years and still working when I swapped it out 4 years ago to circumvent an interruption if it went out during the summer.
This unit has been trouble free for the past 4 years. It is a 4 ton Trane and I replaced every component except the ductwork. Oh, and it was $6500.

Plenty of options.....
Consider getting another quote to replace just the coil. $6500 seems sky high.
And consider leaving the Trane. That thing is likely to be around and functioning for some time.
