I need a 12-15 kW generator to have on standby for hurricane outage. Will be powering lights/tvs/and one 4ton AC unit

I went through FactoryPure to get my Champion generator. They installed the Tri-Fuel kit so I can connect to my gas line. Haven't had a chance to hook it up yet to give it a test run, but has all good reviews.

it's going to be massive, but the only way to get that kind of power out of a "natural gas" portable generator is by converting what is possibly the biggest portable generator on the market to natural gas with a kit
remember that natural gas lowers the generator output power, getting a generator that is greater than 15kw and converting it to natural gas will put it in that range after the conversion

I have an 11kw converted to NG. Runs my 3 ton AC (soft start kit installed) and everything else in the 2700 sqft house. I peave the other 4 ton unit off when running the generator.

$ 2,399.00 plus $279 including installation for the tri fuel kit.

there are plenty of places that sell the trifuel ready champion generators. i believe tractor supply has them.

No, just realized I had a smaller generator, like I said still haven't had a chance to crank it up. Mainly laziness/complacency as I already put it in the shed and have had it for a few months now
8kW generator
Did see this one when I went to pull mine up. Still not the 12-15k OP was looking for, but won't need a kit.

Make sure you have a 50 Amp, output plug on the gen, or your just wasting your effort, with only a 30 amp plug.

yea i have that same generator in gas only and need something bigger

You’ll need a 15,000 watt running gen to get to 12,000 natural gas watts. Westinghouse makes an 18,000 watt running gen. May be something to look into.

You can get by with less if you install a soft starter on your AC condenser. Drops amp draw by 70%.

What’s the inlet on your house? Unless you put in a transfer switch, typically the most you’ll get is 50A. Even some of the bigger portable gens only have a 50A max output through one plug. So that’s gonna limit you to 12kW.
As mentioned, if you get a soft start for the AC, it should drastically reduce the startup load and allow you to run the AC on a smaller generator.

Is there a daily benefit to having the soft start or is it only beneficial for power outage situations?

They also increase the longevity of your compressor. Reduces the mechanical stress at startup.
They’re a bit pricey (~$300), which is most likely why manufacturers haven’t made them original equipment.

if you see lights dipping when the AC kicks on a soft starter will stop that
a hard start kit works well too, it's not as good but a lot cheaper
in fact, a soft starter has a hard start capacitor built into it in addition to the TRIAC

I have this one and it works great! Runs my entire house except one a/c as I have three of them.
