Just curious what everyone has at home.

I am considering switching from Centipede to Bermuda once my current fertilizer runs out and trying to understand if I’ll be switching mowers as well.

I currently have a standard rotary push mower. The cheapest reel mower I’ve seen is the California trimmer; looks solid, can pay a little more for a Honda engine. Any opinions on this mower? I don’t think the toro greensmaster is going to be in the budget.

FWIW, I only have about 3500 sqft of lawn.

You can't use what you have? Is it that big of a difference?

Keep your blades sharp and the mower you have shouldn't be a problem

Was wondering about the quality of a push reel mower. I have a small 800ft square by my pool with empire zoysia I’m going to try and keep at 1” or so HOC.

Would this work well?

Currently using a Honda rotary

I started with a push reel. They do make electric conversion kits. Did buy a Cali Trimmer used last week. It's a game changer. Reel mower mods should be releasing their electric kits in a few weeks though. You might already have batteries for it.

Would consider starting with a push reel mower as well.

1) 3500sq ft would be easy to knock out.
2) can make sure that you are committed to actually reel mowing before dropping more money
3) the cut is pretty good for a manual and is better than a rotary for sure. Only issue I have is when it gets thick, you might have some waviness in the grass when mowing at 1inch or less. Only way to minimize that is to either get a reel that has more than 5 blades, double cut, or consider switching to a gas(or possibly electric) reel mower then.

empire zoysia

You can try. I do find that it can be harder to manually reel mow zoysia since it tends be thicker. Hard to get the mower through easily.

A 7 blade earthwise would work well. I have a 5 blade as well and the difference is night and day.

F all that push reel business. Get the California and pay for the Honda. You’ll live the cut you get with that mower. Buy some back lap compound and figure it out. Probably 3 years before you will need a sharpen.

If you’re not going to hybrid bermuda, you don’t necessarily need a reel mower. I mean, you surely can use a reel mower on common or hybrid, but don’t think you absolutely have to get a reel on all bermudas. What type bermuda are you looking at?

I use an Ego 21” rotary with dual blades. That’s a game changer in itself.

I also recently modified it to cut under 1”.
My maintenance HOC is now the level 2 setting, which cuts about 1” if I had to guess.

Can’t you just stick a ruler or tape measure to the ground and see the height of the tallest grass blades after you mow?

This was post scalp. Level 1 on mower deck:

If that’s .5” then I’ve got to assume level 2 is 1”

Factory settings went from notch one at 1.5” to notch six at 4” so I might have lowered the deck a whole inch using smaller wheels.

That’s exactly my setup, small area around the pool sodded w zoysia. Currently using a manual reel mower that works well but you have to keep blades sharp. I do plan to upgrade to a California trimmer or something similar but the push reel mower is getting me by for now.

EH.... screw all that.

Keep the blades sharp on your current mower and spend your money elsewhere. Or just save your money.

This is a classic “to each his own”. If he considers it a hobby and wants those stripes then a what’s 2k if it lasts ten years?

It’ll be used…a lot

Got my Cali almost new for $800. It's a good bit of fun. Just depends on how far you want to take it. Probably when the heat of summer hits I'll cut back and cut higher a bit.
