Is there a way to ballpark landscaping cost?

I have about 120’ x 4’ beds that I’d like to get an estimate for a professional to design and install. Can anyone ballpark this without really knowing what kind of plants they’ll be putting in? I’m not going to be going with anything exotic. But I would like to know what I’m looking at to get a pro company to do this. I just want a ballpark before bothering with having anyone come out to give me an estimate.

A good rule of thumb is always more than you think it’s going to be when it comes to landscaping. I’ve found if you do the projects in the winter months when they’re slow they’ll cut a good deal

Could always do a plant budget. I would think the construction of the beds, type of materials in bed, irrigation, etc. can be done without knowing precisely what plants. That's how I did mine recently and we just figured the actual plants out later.

I had roughly 80’ x 4’ beds done last year including lighting and irrigation. I was expecting close to $20k extrapolating off previous smaller job we had done. I was elated when the landscaping company proposal came back right at $10k. They did a great job. Very pleased.

Holy shite, looks like I’ll be hiring some high school kids to do the digging and soil replacement and I’ll plant myself.

What a waste of money to spend $10-20K on something that doesn’t last very long. I’m all for acceptable looking yards but that’s just downright wasteful.

Do it yourself. The first round of landscapers went double the budget. The second round was double that. Fricking ripoff. Yeah, it's heavy lifting but your work will be better than theirs. You're looking at 10-20 thousand $. Ask yourself if you would do the job yourself for that pay.

6 15 gal. Trees ~ $1,350
(30) 3 gal. Shrubs ~$1,050
(60) 1 gal. Plants ~ $1,050
Mulch ~ $400
Total is $4,720. This would be a bare minimum estimate for material only, if you want something fairly nice, but not anything special. No lighting, irrigation, tropicals, bigger plants, bedding plants.
Labor is harder to estimate but figure at least double the materials.

Take the total square footage and multiply by 9. $4,320 for materials. Factor $3,000 a day for labor cost.

Yeah buddy. I use my local public works compost place for bulk compost/dirt. Its free in Lafayette Parish. I added plants gradually (over years) when I found them on after the season sales. It wasn't an all in one curbside showstopper, but it looks good now.

I would bet 12k would get it done pretty nicely. On a positive note for the customer I have been contacted twice this week for a project I had quoted to me in the summer and never did...both are hungry for work. I am sure it is a product of it being fall/winter but both offered to rebid and lower the price.

I’m renting a uhaul and going to forest hill on a Saturday and spend a fraction of this. I mean, it won’t look as good because I’m not a designer and it will suck arse to plant 120’ but I’ll get online and get some ideas and research how to layer different types. No way in hell I’m spending more than $4k.

Double does not work, anymore, unless you are hiring a lawn guy with a wheelbarrow and a truck only. If there is a crew, insurance, taxes being paid, no less than 2.5 times. More like 2.8, though, for a basic crew. Quality company is 3-3.5 times materials.

480 sf of landscaping. That’s 11-12 yds of bedding soil raised 8-9 inches. You are looking at roughly 50-60 plants (3 gal). If you need larger plants, prices go up. There are a lot of variables for install, but you should be looking at $4000 max including mulch. That’s could change on the amount of prep work needed though.

I’ll design, build and install what you quoted for a very similar price to what you quoted.
