I have a guy coming by tomorrow to give me an estimate. He said no money down I just just pay the interest for 18 months.

Average bill is around $475 not sure what the usage is.

Generally no. If you live in a state that gives a lot of tax credits it gets closer.

Full disclosure I was in the business years ago and the tech has gotten better.

But the solar panels themselves generally start to fail before any savings pay for itself.

Then are you considering a battery back up system? The reason I ask is that lithium batteries are getting A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE.

The futhur north you live the less sunshine. Also you will need a large south facing structure (normally your roof) free of shade all day. Then the slop where you mount it has to be optimized for your latitude. So if you live at 30 or 35 degrees N than your roof needs to slope the same from horizontal. This is to maximize the energy received from the sum.

So do your homework and the last person to trust is the solar energy company salesperson.

So do your own homework. Find independent information,

If you're going off grid, you can use used panels. There's been a steady supply of them as critical use facilities have to swap them out early in their life span. I'm going to throw up a grid over my cattle pens so i don't have to worry with roof penetrations etc and the girls will appreciate the shade.

This. Admittedly you might be an exception because your current bull is SO high, but between the battery costs, inevitable panel cost and panel maintenance you will almost never come out on top unless you are getting massive rebates.

The salesman will make it sound amazing with nothing down and just interest for a year and a half, but do a lot of diligence because it will likely be a sink in the long run.

Solar panels vs standby generator, which is a better deal?

Personal opinion - standby generator, but I can't objectively explain my logic. The generator is more likely to survive the storm than the panels and interconnected system.

Depends on your expectations. Stand by generator will power your entire house, off grid solar likely will not with out generator help. Off grid solar could potentially pay for itself over time though.

Unless you have an insane amount of batteries a standby Gen is the way to go. People misunderstand most of the solar panel systems are feedback to the electric grid that lower your bill. Standby battery power is a whole other animal. A 20K battery backup system is probably 25K just in batteries alone.

You may want to read this about solar cells:

typical solar cell only produces about 33% of the total solar energy received.

A buddy of mine just told me he leases his panels. So with that cost, plus the electricity you use from the power company, I feel like it evens out. IDK, maybe there are different situations.

My current electric bill is approx $350.00 a month. We are currently moving into another house that has solar panels. The ex-owner told me his electric bills averaged approximately 50 to 60 dollars a month and he showed me the bills. Our March bill was 41 dollars, so it looks like we're gonna save approx $3600.00 a year. Thats all I know about solar panels.

It's according to how your system is installed. I had a customer that showed his system and claimed that Florida Power sent a check each month for about $120, due to power produced by his panels. Then I asked "And the power goes out? What do you get from those panels to run the house?" "Nothing" Battery backup is essential. Your panels are not designed to turn and follow the sun. They are stationary.
Heat reduces the efficiency of the panels. 33% is about right. Huge solar farms are 33-30% efficient ....More study and the salesman is not the place to go.

My neighbor behind me has been building his house for 2 years. He just put a 500k Tesla roof on it. Insane.

Is that the one with the paint that has solar panel properties?

Yeah 500k US dollars. It's a damn 13000 sq ft house. It looks like shingkes and each shingle is a panel. Dude also put in a 300,000 gallon pool with 3 different hot tubs. It is definitely excessive.

completely depends on local subsidies, electric rates AND metering types used/allowed in your area.

They aren't really interchangeable. They would typically serve different purposes. Not many folks can backup a home with solar/batteries.
