Both are within 10 minutes of my house, but HD is in a huge strip mall with another strip mall behind it, which makes getting in and out a PITA. For that reason alone, I go to Lowe's 90% of the time.

Both on same hwy just opposite sides.
Depends which way I’m going. Trying to make a left hand turn can be dangerous.

Lowe’s gives a veterans discount every day. Home Depot only on Veterans Day. No contest.

for appliances lowes has better prices and choices

for lumber and hardware home depot has better prices and choices

for the rest of the stuff you have to compare but it flip flops depending on what you need

Depends what you're looking for, how convenient the location is, sales, etc.
Having said that I've had awful customer service from Home Depot when buying windows and install.

HD generally - seems like I'm able to get american made stuff more often

But getting 5% off with Lowes card when things are equal is hard to beat

Not true, show your veterans ID and you can get a 10% discount every day at HD. I have a vets identifier on my DL and they honor it every time.

Home Depot’s published policy:
quote:

Eligibility – U.S. stores: The discount is offered in the U.S. to all active duty military personnel, reservists, retired or disabled veterans and their immediate families. Veterans who do not have a VA service-connected disability rating may only be eligible for the military discount during national holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4th, and Veterans Day.

Conversely, Lowe’s offers discount to any honorably discharged veteran every day.

you can look up what you want online, and it tells you exactly where it is in the store

Yep. It’s also possible to buy online, walk up to the counter, give them ID, and they hand it to you at the pro desk.

Helps if ya have kids with you and don’t want to drag them in and around the store.

In my area Lowe’s is better and it’s closer. But Home Depot has tool rental and Lowe’s doesn’t. Really helpful for renting machines that I don’t want to buy to only use once or twice

I think they all depend on local managers. Honestly for service both are shite. If you use either to build a house you are a dumbfrick. We only have a Lowe’s here in Thibodaux and it’s fricking useless. Unless you need to fix something at 8 pm there is no reason to go. I actually drive to Houma to Home Depot if there is something I know they have that I can’t find local.just a better selection overall. Home Depot tool selection kills Lowe’s and now Lowe’s is trying to go the sears route and have a craftsman only line.

If I know what I need, HD (it’s closer to my house). If I need a little help with something (before I discovered this board and the outdoor board), I go to Lowe’s. The workers at my local Lowe’s are way more knowledgeable than my local HD. But like others have said, each has their advantages, depending on what you’re looking for.
