My dog came in with some fleas a little over a week ago, which has never happened before. I treated her, vacuumed the rugs, couch, etc. stripped and washed the beds, including hers. When I went outside to see if I could figure out where she was getting them, I found a hot spot in the side yard. I probably had a dozen on my ankles from walking 10’.

I sprayed the area and beyond with Talstar and IG Regulator (including under the house). Went out for the second spray today, and the bitches are even worse. I’ve never dealt with a bad flea problem before, so I ask— is this normal and should I stay the course (one more treatment next week), or is the Talstar not working and time to move on to gasoline?

TIA.

Spectracide should work. Broadcast it pretty heavily in infested area and a little wider for insurance. I usually wet it down pretty thoroughly afterwards. Will need to be done the following week as well because the eggs will be hatching.

If that doesn’t eliminate them, use diesel in a pump sprayer. Nothing lives through that.

Maybe the new ones hatched. I don't think it kills eggs but I'm not sure. You can sweep boric acid or diatamaceous earth on your floors if they come inside.

My advice is don’t do any home remedy or natural treatment bullshite. Use the harmful chemicals right off the bat if you want rid of em

I second this. About 6 or 7 years ago, we had a bad infestation in our basement garage. Two dogs that were outside most of the day, and had a crate with beds in it inside where they slept at night. I was letting them out one morning and felt a flea jump on my leg. I gave them both a flea bath and treated them with the stuff you squirt behind their head. A week later, fleas were back in force.

I learned a ton about fleas that summer. The thing that finally worked, was going nuclear on them. We were in a neighborhood group for mosquito spraying, and I asked the guys to spray the yard for fleas, and asked if there was anything they could do inside the basement. I had tried bug bombs, diatomaceous earth, vacuuming daily with the shop vac, spraying, etc. Even bought the bed bug foggers since they were supposedly better than just the average bug bombs. He said there was some stuff they were only supposed to use outside, and if we promised to not go in there for several days, he could nuke it. We were already parking in the driveway instead of the garage since we didn't want fleas getting in the vehicles. So I made the dogs sleep outside for a week, and it finally got rid of them. Go hard and heavy and take care of it once. I think the egg hatching timeline is about 10-12 days, so you might have to do something twice.

Use the liquid Talstar, my yard was infested while being treated continuously with PL granules.

You are on the right track with the combo of Talstar liquid and IG regulator.

Do a second treatment 7-10 days later with Talstar liquid only.

Important to plan these treatments when there is no rain for 48 hours after.

Here is the recipe I got from Pestop in BR. It worked after I had been fighting them myself for 4-6 weeks.

Yeah, I’m not spraying diesel under my house.

This is the regimen I’m using. I’ll stay the course.

I had them so bad at a rent house one time. My kids were very young and started looking diseased! It took us awhile to figure out it was fleas. We didn’t even have pets but the neighbor across the street had tons of cats. We tried all the chemicals you can think of along with two different exterminators with zero effectiveness. It took a three prong strategy to win this war. 1. Get rid of the cats(delicate situation for sure as the neighbor was a crazy shut in). 2. Get rid of all standing leaves, cut grass really short, basically clean up the yard really good. 3. Make the problem area uninhabitable to the fleas( they were coming from underneath the house, diesel eliminated the problem). Caveat is we couldn’t stay in the house for a week or so

Nowhere in your original post did you mention killing fleas under your house.
The diesel spraying was a last resort if the spectracide didn’t get them. (It will but eggs hatch). Nothing lives through the diesel.

Sorry for helping.

I figured you missed the part about spraying under the house, so just having a little fun, hoss. No need to be sensitive.

I did miss that. Sorry about that. Must have skipped the second paragraph.
Maybe I just saw the gasoline part and wanted to say that diesel would be a much better choice. (Although not ideal)

Apologies, sir.

Yeah fleas and mosquitoes are the literal pest. I think I have PTSD from a flea battle we had.

I don't have much to add except that there is no worse animal on this earth than a damn flea. We had them in our house and carpet in BR years ago and I don't remember what the wife used to get rid of them, but they were awful.

Talstar is bifenthrin 7.9%. It works, but flea eggs hatch every 7 days, so spray weekly for 4-6 weeks. Also with the 7.9% you can double the dose per gal water to make it stronger.

The Talstar Pro is 25.1 % but you cant buy it, because that strength is a restricted use pesticide, unless you have a pesticide card. So you can double or triple your 7.9% strength. I'd double it. Then your spraying 15.8% bifenthrin. Spray both inside and outside the home every 7 days for 4-6 weeks.
