Gas Powered Edger Recommendation

I had an MTD gas edger with a 3.5hp Briggs and Stratton engine that finally crapped out after 15 years. Loved it but they don’t make it anymore. Tried a Ryobi battery powered but just not want I want. I know there are a bunch of similar gas powered units but am looking for some advice. What ya got?

I got away from them. Just flip the weed eater upside down and walk. Just my opinion of course. I bet you could find one like you had on market place for cheap if that’s what you want, though.

I run a stihl kombi system where I can switch from edger to trimmer to hedge trimmer and recommend it highly.

Stihl FC 91 is the best I’ve ever used for residential edging. It’s sturdy enough for commercial.
I still have my old 3.5hp edger but it’ll head to the scrap heap next trip there.

I just bought a Stihl edger, FC70. Much better than my old craftsman 4-stroke I’ve used for the last 15 years.

I did the same. Can't remember the last time I used the edger. There's definitely a learning curve to get a straight edge though

i had a walk behind edger like you for years and switched recently to a pole edger (echo pe-225). Love it. much easier to handle, can get into tight places.

I’ve had the echo model for over 10ys now. No issues

McClane. It has been great.

Pick up a used Mclane on marketplace. They last forever.

If just the engine is worn out, you can probably find a replacement. Find the engine model number (Briggs stamps them on a metal fin on/near the flywheel shroud) and call Ivy's Mower since you're in BR. They can help you out.

This is a good suggestion. I saw a McLane on FB marketplace not too long ago for less than $300.

McClane, 28 years old. I get it serviced and tuned up about every 18 months. Best piece of power equipment I’ve ever owned.
Side story: Once I was edging and thought I would just walk away from it to pull a piece of grass out of the sidewalk. It took off on me and ran about a half a block before it hit a sidewalk and flipped. And it didn’t shut off. Was a sight to see, it running down the street.

I’ve had a Stihl for about 6 years. It’s been great.

Had a McLane for years that finally crapped out so I went with a Stihl FC91 and it's super easy to get around and I like it, but it's probably not as stable as the McLane or really any walk behind edger.
If you get one, I highly recommend getting a Darwin's Grip to attach to it and that also goes for any trimmer. So much better on your back.
