This a DIY job or better to let someone else do it? Anyone have a ballpark estimate?

Call the company who originally did it and see if they can provide a new warranty

If you do decide this is something you want to tackle be careful loading up the tension on that spring.

I went so far as buying the spring, but thought better at the last minute. It's an inexpensive job and best left to a professional, with the correct tools.
If I was 20 years younger no doubt my dumb arse would have attempted this, though.

Was gonna tell you to be careful if you decide to do it yourself. Those springs will hurt you bad.

Yea, sounds lot easier to write a check. Thanks

Smart decision. If you have torsion springs (the ones on the bar above the door) then those are very dangerous for people who are going to figure it out as they go. The deaths that occur from this is usually people falling off the ladder when they screw up and the spring unwinds and breaks a wrist or throws the winding bars into the persons face.
Then you have the other issue of the cables that will cut off your fingers in a second if you don't know what your doing.

Hire someone. Yes it’s expensive

Hire someone. Usually 100.00 per spring installed. If you have 2 springs replace both even if both aren't broken.

Mine was $90 per spring ($180) and $100 for the call out. Well worth it and cheaper than an ER visit

Do you like having 10 fingers? If so, call someone.

As a chiro, yes I like and need my fingers
$300 or so sounds good to me to avoid the ER.

Let a professional handle it. Should run about $100 plus parts, if needed.

Done this a couple times.
It's always a bitch to get them just like you want even with a 2nd hand, everyone's right it's a deceptively easy looking but dangerous process, and my last time was the time before last where I paid to have my parents done.

it's a deliberate process--you can be seriously injured if you are reckless and sloppy.
It is an easy process as long as the job is understood--YouTube is your friend.
I've replaced the torsion springs on my garage and a neighbor's garage. I bought beefier springs and the cycle life of my new springs should last 40 to 50 years for minimal additional cost.

there are many DIY things I will do. Hell I will make windows and try and build double pane glass inserts laminating glass building a vacuum pump out of a refrigerator to get a good seal hell dig out my own basement, siding roofing plumbing electrical no problem, BUT 2 things I tried and will not do again gutter work and garage doors. PAY FOR IT.

I will tinker with just about anything ( plumbing, electrical, carpentry, a/c repairs, landscaping, etc) and can figure most of it out, but I will not touch a garage door spring

Sounds like the garage door install guys need to be charging more than $100

And I've never shied away from anything dangerous. Was a class 5 open canoer who routinely lead kayaks down 1st descents, a lead climbing trad climber, who also free soloed some, have caught rattle snakes for fun, and once had a summer job pushing in blasting caps on a dynamite crew. Who like Cracker has done every step of building a house at least once and most many times over. Including pattern making, boat building, cabinetry, and even one hand hewn half dove tail notched log cabin from the round.
Would I do springs again. Yes, if need be. Would I tell someone else to give it a try because of youtube... HELL NO. ...I'd have to know you before making that call.
ETM: emboldened: especially considering the price
