I need custom built in bookcases/shelving put in in 2 places in our house. Yall gave me great recs on door makers before, but the ones I asked didn't do this type of work.

Is there anyone I should be calling that you've had good experience with?

Thanks!

We got multiple quotes from the suggestions here and ended up with Cook construction. They were super easy to deal with, very responsive in communication and got the builtins done quickly. They turned out great. Thanks again H&G board!

When we lived in Baton Rouge we used the Rustic Shack to build several pieces of furniture for us including a built in mud room and several bookcases. He can build pretty much anything you want and a very nice guy. Rustic Shack

I've used Jason Schexnaidre in Port Allen for a remodel where he built some very nice built-ins for me

I recently used Cabinets R Us in Gonzales for some interior built ins - filing cabinets, shelving, cabinets, bookcases. Name sounds like large company but it’s not - son and father, several employees. Easy to work with - I’d use them again.

Don’t have a website but they have a FaceBook page - Trey (son) and James (father) Richey.

Just so you're understanding what was included in the scope - the bottom cabinets for both were already in place. The new built ins included the upper bookshelves from cabinet top to ceiling as well as replacing crown molding.

Painting was done separately.

The cost for both sets of shelves was $4400. I received quotes up to $8500. Cook Construction was least expensive and they came out to get measurements before giving a quote as well as provided a 3d rendering to ensure we were on the same page. Some quotes were based solely on pictures and some did not include renderings.

At first I thought $4,400 for complete sets with doors, drawers, hardware, painting, etc. wasn't too terrible. Then I kept reading.

frickity frick that's wild. Not implying you overpaid or anything, because apparently that's the going rate. It's just wild!!! $4,400 for a couple of bookshelves and some crown moulding?

We were also interested in converting 1 of our 2 two car garages into living space to include a bedroom, adding a shower to an existing adjacent half bath, and adding a small office.

All told would've added 429sq ft to the house but was all already covered under the roof. Had biddable plans drawn and a contractor gave us a bid - $154k (~$350/Sq ft). Just insane. Construction costs are just out of control.

As a hobby woodworker it always amazes me how much these jobs cost! I need to start invoicing the wife...

I built something similar for the inlaws about 2 years ago, just not all the way to the ceiling, so easier to deal with molding. Just cabinet grade plywood right now is probably 500 or more for a job that size. So if I'm trying to make money for my time, it's gonna be a few thousand for a job like that. $4,400 seems a little high, but everything seems high nowadays. $8000+ is outrageous.

As far as adding room, my parents just bought an older 2,000 sq ft house and totally re-did the whole thing. New roof, total kitchen remodel, Custom shower, flooring, complete paint job, etc. for ~$130k.

Whoa! I built 5 sets of shelves and base cabinets plus crown several years ago. I need to get a side gig!

ETA… this was my inspiration and mine look like this without the sconces. Think someone would pay $10k-$12k for this?

No kidding. I have a complete wall of built ins that are completely filled and I need more. Plan to build a corner shelf/cabinet unit in another spot.

Absolutely. I follow a woodworking forum and they post their wook and what they charged the customer all the time. I’m amazed at what they post. Something like that would go for $15K-$20K easily depending on region.

looks nice, I asked for a quote for two simple built ins on both sides of my fire place, I think each side was roughly 6' long. Both quotes came in over $4,000. I did it myself over a few weekends for $700.
