Certainteed versus Tamko Shingles

Getting the roof replaced by insurance. I had a three tab and the contractor will upgrade to Tamko architectural shingles free of charge. A few neighbors got Certainteed, a brand I am more familiar with and which look great. Incremental cost is not too bag. $50 a square, so about $1,500 total in my case.
Internet reviews are all over the place. Curious if the board has any recommendation or warning. I’m leaning towards paying for the upgrade but open to suggestions.

I got a new roof a few months back and ended up with GAF Timberline shingles. But I recall that most of the reviews of Tamko that I ran across were not very good if that helps at all.

Got a new roof a few years back. Researched the hell out of shingles. Went with Atlas as they were significantly higher rated than others. Certainteed distant second but recovered well since the defect issues. Tamko had quite a few negative reviews.
ETA: LOL. Autocorrected to hell.
ETA again: just looked at my paperwork. Wasn't GAF. Was Atlas Pinnacle Pristine - WW.

I did the deep dive research in 2022. I have no idea if any of this is still true:
Certainteed was significantly better from both a manufacturing and warranty standpoint.

Tamko is a builder grade shingle and Certainteed is better shingle in my opinion.
I think the best two options right now are the Owens Corning Duration and Atlas Pinnacle Pristine. I went with OC Duration due to the Kevlar nailing strip. The shingles also hold up well and fungal growth doesn’t develop on the surface like the cheaper shingles.
I would definitely look into getting a fortified roof if replacing now. I don’t know the price difference but you may find it worthwhile with insurance savings.
BTW, not many small roofing companies carry or stock shingles themselves. They purchase from a supply house per job. They are incentivized selling a particular brand by the shingle manufacturer/sales rep. They may get a few benefits by pushing a certain brand.
Keep in mind, if insurance is paying for your roof, the roofer usually has about a 33% profit built into that price and some shitty roofers will push a cheaper shingle to make more money.
You’re the boss, don’t let the roofer steer you in the wrong direction. Quotes from roofers are usually always free. Even if you have a contract with a particular roofer, I would still shop around to get some other opinions.

Just went with OC on a fortified. Most were pushing GAF but I liked the contractor better that suggested OC.

GAF Timberline can be bought at Home Depot. Not a great shingle

I have the same. It supposedly won’t get those black streaks that you see on roofs but there is a guarantee they will clean the black streaks at no charge if they do appear.

Has buying roofs always been such a difficult decision requiring hours of research and analysis?
I bought one 20 years ago and they gave me a price and that’s it. Just went through the fortified process and all the salesmen run through the minutiae of the latest in shingle and underlayment technology. Then there are all of the warranties upon warranties. 20 years ago a warranty wasn’t even in the discussion. It was all borderline exhausting.

Same. They look great. Some folks will say “oh it’s builder grade” etc. but IMO as an architectural shingle it’s already far superior to the old 3-tab shingles we all survived just fine with before architectural was a thing.

Really good advice here. IMO I would not install a Tamko shingle on my roof. As said ,the reviews are terrible and a builder grade product.
OC Duration is the best IMO due to the nail strip. Recently installed these on my roof.

The first sign of trouble from your contractor is not being honest or not giving you an apples to apples comparison. The two manufacturers are roughly the same price. He might prefer Tamko to GAF.
Most of the people commenting on this board have no experience with shingles. They do research which is all over the place. Shingles are market based preference and marketing. What is popular in Shreveport may not be popular in Baton Rouge. Certainteed and Atlas sell like crazy in BR, but GAF is more popular in NO.
It’s a lot like trucks. Some people swear by Ford trucks, others say Chevy is the best. Depends on experience. Problem 8s the general public does not have many experiences with shingles.
Bottom line is they are very similar.
Sometime insurance companies are making some people replace roofs that are 10 years or older in order to write a homeowner’s policy.
Before you do a Fortified roof, make sure your insurance company gives a discount….most do not.

Neither. Two of my least favorite shingles but if I had to pick from one of the worst of two evils I'd probably go Tamko because at least when your roof is only 3 years old it wont be discolored from all the algae like the CT will.
