Can you recommend me a sliding miter saw?

My 12” 18 year old single bevel porter cable is on the way out and I’m looking for a replacement. I’m set up for metabo or dewalt batteries if anyone can convince me to go cordless. I’ve read some negative reviews on the metabo 10” slider sold at Lowe’s etc but also noted a higher dollar version that I don’t see much feedback on. I’ll be framing and trimming a barndominium with this saw. Thanks for your time.

Dewalt has the slider that runs on batteries or plugs in. I have the regular Dewalt slider, so no experience with the combo. Not sure if other brands offer this or not either.

Is that the 7 1/4?

I love my 12" Hitachi. No experience with the newer metaboHPT version.

My reading shows a lament for the Japanese hitachi versions

Makita's latest saw apparently has good dust collection for a miter saw and is getting positive reviews. If budget is no issue, get the Festool Kapex

I currently own the Dewalt slider and it’s terrible compared to my old Ridgid. I gave away my Ridgid to my neighbor because he spent countless hours helping me rehab the home. Bought the Dewalt and wished I kept the Ridgid.
Dewalt doesn’t slide as smooth. The stand isn’t as nice and the extra power it produces causes the blade/handle to jump.

Dewalt 12" slider if you really need/want a sliding miter saw. I have a Dewalt 10" single bevel, 12" double bevel, and the cordless 7-1/4" slider.

The metabo 8.5 looks interesting but I don’t think I’d like hunting down blades if needed and like the other one, there’s a lack of reviews. On the dewalt 7 1/4, is is laser or blade shadow for positioning the cut?

Blade shadow but I've been using miter saws so long that I don't need or rely on such things. I picked up the 7-1/4" saw because I was planning on some LVL installs in the near future, before my heart tried to crap out on me. PCD 7-1/4" blades are far cheaper and easier to get than 10" and 12" ones.

Ridgid register and have a lifetime warranty

I have this one Bosch Glide 12" dual bevel.
It has been a great saw and gets used often. The design allows you to set it up against a wall because there are no bars that the saw slides on.
It's expensive but I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

Last year my cousin who is a home builder, used a new 20v 7.25" Dewalt for finishing the inside of his new 3200sf house.
His son is using it now for flooring and it's been GTG. My 20+ year old 12" Delta double compound is showing its age (me too) and I'm going to replace it with the Dewalt since I'm stocked up on their batteries/tools.

I upgraded from an old craftsman 10” slider about a year ago.
Ended up purchasing the 12” Hercules slider from HF and have been very impressed with it.
Has the shadow line (love this… only time I don’t is when I have it outside and it’s sunny)
I’ve used it to trim my entire house and to do various other projects. Stock blade was nice and sharp and the saw cut saw square right out the box.
I have it mounted on a Rigid folding stand that makes it easy to roll out the shed.
For $300, it’s been a hard saw to beat.

I think the ideal setup is to have a 12” corded slider in a stationary location and a 7 1/4 battery powered slider for portability.
I have a 10” slider that’s a good compromise on that setup, and it’s nice to share blades with the table saw. However, I recently got a 7 1/4 battery slider and use that 95% the time now because it’s so light and portable.

I’ll check out the battery powered dewalt this weekend. I’m well stocked with dewalt batteries.

Big Sky Tool has reconditioned Hitachi/Metabo saws, corded and cordless.
There are probably similar sites selling recon tools from other brands, if you're interesting in saving some money.
