CAD is back. Back again. UPDATE - bathroom 95% done!

so, first a couple of pics to 'set the stage'. we ran out of money when we bought our house a couple of years ago so several rooms remained 'undone'. the bathroom was fine..albeit humble but enter The Lovely Mrs CAD and her hammer and energy and lo she began to destroy our bathroom thinking she was going to do the remodel herself.
6 months..8 months...12 months later..the ramifications of that decision are in place for everyone to enjoy.
(SIDEBAR - that vent is taped closed because one day i went to use the toilet and lo and behold a BAT was sleeping in the opening and i had to gird myself in chainmail armor to remove him without risking getting rabies but i digress...
So, there you have it. This has been our guest bathroom for the last year more or less.
HOW QUAINT.
***
today however, a new chapter, a fresh new wind has blown in (thanks to local tile stores and our friend, Mr. AI) has emerged and we have hired someone to take the bathroom apart.
So, pausing here I wish to relay a cute story.
I often use this bathroom; sometimes late at night particularly if I've pissed The Lovely Mrs. CAD off and she relegates me to the upstairs guest room Gulag.
Oftentimes I'm doing my business and doom scrolling at THREE AM and suddenly the bathroom is alive with the sounds of scuttling animals.
yet i turn the light on, use my flashlight on my phone...look around and THERE IS NOTHING THERE
yet the sound persists.
THEY ARE LITERALLY RIGHT NEXT TO ME
So only today, the mystery is finally revealed. Yes friends, this 1970s era house is just FULL of non-great-stuff openings and that 'bath fitter' bathtube enclosure was apparently nothing more than Club Second Floor for pets and part of the elaborate "second house" occupied by squirrels, chipmunks, mice, demons from hell and whatnot and they're just having the time of their life.
I can almost hear them saying "this MF has been in the bathroom for 37 minutes..watch me freak him the frick out when he hears me RIGHT NEXT TO HIM BUT CANT SEE ME!"
ok sorry, i got off on a tanget. but anyway, The Lovely Mrs. CAD and i picked tile and lights and shower fixtures from amazon and i asked Mr. AI to open the closet wall next to current bath tub (a shallow useless hall closet right now) and it literally read my mind and put the tile in we picked out, correct proportions, the whole 9 years. so this is where we are going with the bathroom. will keep you appraised.
(pic of shallow, useless hall closet)
Covering the stamped ceiling with boards (if this works we'll replicate in the halls and everywhere else we have stamped ceilings), expanding the closet for towels and drywalling the exterior door to the closet, tiling everything and of course new vanity, toilet, etc etc.
Thats its. My story is done.
cool story bro

For that long insert, did you have to block the wall over it similar to what you’d do for a door?

Yes you do have to have a header if it’s load-bearing. If not, a simple 2x4 for nailing purposes will do. But on one that wide I’d put a header in anyway.

I really like the vertical tiles, wish ore people would do it, but they usually opt for the “safer” choice and go horizontal.
Sorry, didn’t realize that was a computer generated image.
When the actual tile guy comes, have him center the niche on that back wall. Didn’t want to say anything if it was already done.

I find bats in weird enclosed spaces pretty often. Every time I scream like a girl
that rendering looks great and you should absolutely go with terrazzo on the floor. An extremely underrated flooring choice

Just wanted to double check your priorities. Did you get your shop before you finished the bathroom?

And to everyone yes that's an AI rendering using the materials we selected to give our contractor a rough idea of what we wanted.
I had to give up on the led light in the shampoo box because the schluter kit was ridiculous. It was like $1,400 when you included all the required components to integrate it.

bump. here is the original AI design
here is the (mostly) completed bathroom. waiting on a 48" wall shelf and the shower glass to arrive.
we opted for a slightly more muted terrazzo tile instead of the bright white we picked originally.

Looks nice baw. That’s some deep shelves. Put you a pillow and blanket on the bottom for when Mrs. CAD kicks you out the bed.

quote:thank you! we probably made it a little wide; but if you see teh photo at the top, it was a shallow hall closet (we took the door out in the hallway) and you could barely stack towels in there and forget putting a blanket or comforter.

now we can put a rolling laundry cart in there and PLENTY of room to put linens in the back and maybe some baskets on the shelves to hold things.

We are going to redo the bathroom in our new house and my wife wants that exact green vertical tile for the shower
Posted on 5/14/26 at 1:43 pm to CAD703X
Tell me about the floor in the shower, is that a tile?
Posted on 5/14/26 at 1:59 pm to CAD703X
that looks fantastic dude. Between this and the shed you’ve come a long way competency-wise from the days of growing green steaks in your fridge

quote:yes. hexagon version of the same tile used on the rest of the floor. needs a good scrubbing once we have the shower glass in it will show better.
