Thinking about slate or brick tiles in the kitchen. I like the look. Is it really as hard to keep clean as people say? difficult to install? bad material for kitchen? Just looking for any input to help make decision.

My sister inlaw's rental house had brick flooring and it was not something I would ever want to install in a house. Just looked bad aesthetically and it was a rent house. The work quality was also rent house quality. Maybe I'm bias because of this so take that for what its worth.
Do you have a picture of what you're trying to accomplish? If you're hell bent on doing it, I would almost put the flooring down and apply a thick layer of epoxy over the top so its smooth.

I like the brick floor look. Not sure how hard it would be to change out in the future if you ever got tired of the look.
Slate can be slippery when wet. I'm not sure if that would cause problems in the kitchen.

I have brick in the kitchen
Kinda hard to keep super clean, especially the grout, but it also doesn't really show a lot of dirt
I have no real complaints

Slate is not a great choice. Especially the slate from India which is very prone to delamination. If you really want it get it from the New England states like Vermont. It is highly irregular in size and thickness so you would either build a box screed or wet set it. Best to leave that to a real pro.
Brick is nice but labor intensive, especially the grouting. Great look, though. Again, best to leave to an experienced installer. No jacklegs !

Agree.
We have brick papers that are actual face cut brick and not that man-made junk. We love the odd features, the imperfections and everything. Only down side is, we'll it's time for a good cleaner and re-sealing again so moving everything out is gonna suck.

We have true brick floors in our kitchen laundry room, when we built the contractor said he would not do pavers if we wanted brick he would only do true brick, so we went with it, picked out some nice red old reclaimed brick, anyway when they poured our slab they overlooked that they were supposed to recess that portion, huge mess up, the contractor made it good and poured an additional 3” on top of the rest of the slab to make it right, brick layers hated doing them, but took thier time and came out great, 20 years later and we still love them

I have slate tile in my outdoor living space and love it, but not sure I would want it inside or in my kitchen. Eventually, it will flake away in layers. We had originally considered slate for our kitchen but ended up going with porcelain tile. It's super durable, easy to clean and looks great. No experience with brick, but like the look.

Same, our slate is slick and when wet it is truly dangerous for old people and running children. Ours also chips off in layers 10 years later.
I love brick floors in kitchens/laundry

I have brick in my kitchen and slate in my master bath.
Brick is one heck of a project to do by yourself, slate is easier.
Brick in the kitchen is so classic.

Used brick pavers in a number of houses I’ve built. Put on a good sealant. Good to go.

Up here in Massachusetts we generally seal coat our slate floors…
