The Case For Moving Away From “Gendered” Weights
quote:
“Barbells don’t have genders, they have weights,” she explains. Ditto goes for plates, kettlebells, and dumbbells.

I legit thought it was talking about naming weights a girl or boy name like the 45 lb was helga, 35lb Shelly, 25 Margaret, 10 Tina, 5 Daisy
Bumper plates are likely some big titty bitch bc they flopping around.
I was so confused

Calling the heavier, 45-pound barbell a “men’s” barbell and the lighter, 35-pound barbell the “women’s barbell” suggests that all men are stronger than all women, says Royse.
It doesn’t suggest that at all. What a stupid thing to say.
quote:
“Anyone who has ever stepped foot into a CrossFit box knows that there are absolutely women in a CrossFit class who out-lift men in a CrossFit class,” she says. “My daughter, for example, can out-lift my husband any day of the week
Poor guy. Wife is a crossfitter who publicly calls him weak.

The lady quoted in that article, Alyssa Royse, lead the way when crossfit gyms deaffiliated from crossfit because of Glassman's comments.

I've never heard anyone use men's and women's plates.

never seen different barbells labeled as "mens" or "womens"

They are labeled that way for olympic lifts. Women's barbells are 15kg (I think Rogue calls them Bella Bars) and men's barbells are 20kg and are a little thicker (25mm vs 28mm). There is more to it that that, like the bend, but that's the main differences.

It’s more about handsize.
The 35lb barbell is a smaller diameter and more suited for a woman’s hands.

Was coming to say this. Has very little to do with strength.

The different barbells were specifically made for the two genders and should be referred to as such. The author and the woke crossfitter are both morons. Calling things by appropriate names is not a bad thing. Any woman that goes out of her way to say her daughter lifts more weight than her husband has serious issues with men. That's an oddly specific and personal way to try and validate your point.

We are all now dumber from having read this. Thanks.

Have never heard of this and will continue not caring - unless I actually see one, then I'll make sure to EXTRA gender the weights.

Opened the link, not sure why I wasted the time. Outside of a crossfit gym (and I'm sure inside of many of them), no one actually cares. We just note the 35 vs. 45 and leave it up to the individual. She even said they refer to bars by weight, so just keep doing what you do.

I can comfortably hook grip a 35lb bar, 45 is not comfortable for me. Idgaf what it's labelled, use whatever gets you lifting.

I never have. Never heard of such a thing. But will 100% do it now.

i guess i never saw the huge 5 and 10 lb plates until i saw women working out on Instagram. making it look like they have 45s on them.

We should also stop gendering basketballs, everyone should play with the men’s ball. What a dumb count

Ah, that makes sense.
I've seen weights but no genders. Although I have seen pink barbells that were presumably marketed to women.
